Black comedy flick “Echorsis” wins critics, gets second week run

Black comedy film “Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good And Evil” was given a second week run in key Metro Manila after it fought hard from being pulled out in cinemas.

The critically acclaimed horror-comedy film starring John Lapus, Kean Cipriano, and Alex Medina, are still screening in Market! Market!, Festival Mall, Robinsons Galleria, SM North Edsa, SM Manila, and SM Megamall to date. It’s producer Chris Cahilig of Insight 360 hopes that more cinemas will open its door to the film since it’s the only Filipino movie screening this week.

An appeal to moviegoers: Support “Echorsis” by watching it on April 13, its opening day

Just like any independently produced Filipino film, “Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good And Evil” by critically acclaimed director Lemuel Lorca is at risk of being pulled out of movie houses if it doesn’t perform well on its first day.

Thus, the cast and crew of the much anticipated horror-comedy film appeal to Filipino moviegoers to watch “Echorsis” on April 13, its opening day.

“Sana sumugod sa sinehan ang milyon-milyong nag-aabang sa ‘Echorsis’ sa opening day pa lang para manatili ito sa line up ng mga pelikula,” says Alex Medina, who plays the lead role of a gay-swindling gigolo in the movie.

REEL DEAL: Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good and Evil REVIEW

After adjustments on the play dates, the awaited movie starring Kean Cipriano, Alex Medina, and John Sweet Lapus will be finally shown in cinemas with Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good and Evil. Directed by Lemuel Lorca, who also directed the CineFilipino film "Ned's Project".

The film was produced by Chris Cahilig who manages the boy group 1:43 who also were part of the movie. Kean Cipriano also co-produced the film, and also fresh from the success of "Love is Blind" where he worked with Derek Ramsay and Kiray Celis. Alex Medina was also busy with TV and movie projects which makes him one of the in-demand stars as he follows the fame of his father Pen and brother Ping.

John Lapus, also had a previous horror flick for the MMFF, shown excitement for the film's release this April. Echorsis takes a story spin-off from "The Exorcist" with the touch of gay humor and situations. Kean plays Father Nick, a gay priest who performs exorcisms. John plays Kristoff, a closet gay son from a conservative family, while Alex plays Carlo, the lover who will break Kristoff's heart.

John Lapus plays closeted gay in horror-comedy flick ‘Echorsis’

Topnotch comedian and television host John Lapus plays a closeted gay character raised in an uptight religious family in the much-awaited horror-comedy film, “Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good and Evil”—and he is endlessly amused by it.

“Gosh, my character, Kristoff, and I have contrasting experiences with being gay. I was never ‘paminta’ (closeted). Never ako naging stiff and never kong itinago kung sino talaga ako,” John says.

And unlike Kristoff, too, John did not go through a traumatic “coming out” moment with his family. His mom, especially, had accepted his sexuality early on.

“Echorsis” lead star Alex Medina flattered by growing gay fan base

Mention Alex Medina’s name when chatting with a gay friend and chances are your chum will show all signs of being totally smitten.

Indeed, the ruggedly handsome actor and lead star of the horror-comedy film, “Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good and Evil,” has been the object of the local gay community’s sexual fantasies in the past few years, earning him the moniker “kilabot ng mga beki” or “gay heartthrob.”

“I like it,” Alex, the son of acclaimed actor Pen Medina, unabashedly admits. “If my being a gay heartthrob catches on, eh di sige, okay. I am comfortable with the way I am, which is why I’m fine with it. Nakaka-flatter s’ya actually.”

Medina relates that he used to receive numerous “indecent proposals” from gay fans on social media. However, such rabid attention eventually declined when he became more visible in movies and television.

‘Echorsis’ trailer excites moviegoers

MOVIEGOERS of all ages express excitement with the horror-comedy film "Echorsis" after its official trailer was released online last week.

"Echorsis: Sabunutan Between Good and Evil," which features the triumvirate of comedian John Lapus, Callalily vocalist Kean Cipriano, and award-winning independent film actor Alex Medina, received overwhelming reviews from netizens who called the movie "one of the most awaited comedy flicks of the year." The film was directed by critically-acclaimed filmmaker Lemuel Lorca and was written by Jerry Gracio.

REEL DEAL Cinemalaya Specials: The Janitor

Chick flicks everywhere for local cinema, I guess people would eventually crave for a different genre for Pinoy movies. Next to love stories, action is a favorite of Pinoy movie goers, but they are rarely seen on mainstream cinema, and finding a good one is more rarer. The Cinemalaya Film Festival will happen on August, and one of the entries for the Director's Showcase is Mike Tuivera's THE JANITOR.

Starring Dennis Trillo, The Janitor may be an odd choice for a title of a action film but pose a different and deeper understanding about its meaning. Is he a crusader to clean up the mess of crime? Is he a punisher  who has an alter ego of a maintenance guy out to seek vengeance?

We talked to Dennis Trillo and Mike Tuviera about the movie and they shared their excitement for the upcoming movie in August. Fresh from "My Husband's Lover" Dennis Trillo became more buffed for the role as it requires a lot of real action and combat. Direk Mike shares that they also made the action scenes they always wanted to do and doing it right.
