After 15 years – and as the new theatrical film, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” starts screening in the Philippines on April 4 – the cast and creative team of SpongeBob Squarepants have had time to ponder the SpongeBob franchise's legacy.

"It's mind blowing just how big it's become and how long it's gone," muses Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob. "As an actor, you're perennially a freelance employee. We're a bit like migrant workers; we go where the crops are, and SpongeBob is a crop that just keeps growing."

REEL DEAL: Antonio Banderas Is Pirate Villain In “SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER”

Anchoring the live action part in Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies' “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” is series newcomer and Hollywood legend Antonio Banderas (“The Mask of Zorro,” voice of “Puss in Boots”).

In the film, Banderas plays the villainous pirate, Burger Beard, who may or may not have something to do with the missing Krabby Patty recipe.

"Antonio Banderas is a very worthy inductee into the SpongeBob club," says Tom Kenny, who provides the voice SpongeBob Squarepants. "He's got that kind of old Hollywood movie star charisma. When he's on the screen, he just owns it."

REEL DEAL: SpongeBob, Friends Transform Into Superheroes In “SPONGE OUT OF WATER”

In a series of events that could only happen in a SpongeBob movie, our heroes SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy and Plankton take on superhero personas in Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies' new comedy adventure “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.”

The superhero transformation required some reimagining on the part of the filmmakers. The super powers were inspired by each character’s personal interests. "SpongeBob becomes the Incredibubble, because he loves blowing bubbles," explains series creator Stephen Hillenburg. "Patrick loves ice cream, so his power is to summon it. Squidward plays the clarinet, so he becomes a music based hero named Sour Note. They did a great job capturing the spirit and emotions of these characters."

REEL DEAL Movies and Television: Puss in Boots Review

Being one of the most loved characters in the Shrek series, Puss earned his status and worthy enough to have his own movie. Puss in Boots may be a spin off of the original Shrek series however had made it clear that it can provide a great plot on its own.

Telling to origin of the legendary bounty hunter/mercenary, Puss in Boots goes trough many ordeals. Now in quest of the Magic Beans under the possesion of the ruthless Jack and Jill, Puss teams up with his old friend Humpy Dumpy and Kitty Softpaws to get them and use them to got to the castle in the sky where the legendary golden goose can be found.

Though with just a handful of fairy tale characters unlike Shrek, the movie itself has his charisma of giving us the elements of surprize and fun without overdoing it. Also look out for another cat character that makes an epic moment.

REEL DEAL Movie and Television: Puss in Boots Spotlight Antonio Banderas

From the outset, one of the keys to the popularity of the character of Puss in Boots was the voice that came out of the outlaw hero—Antonio Banderas.

Director Chris Miller:  “Puss in Boots is played by Antonio Banderas, or is Antonio Banderas played by Puss in Boots?  I don’t know, sometimes it’s hard to tell the two of them apart.  But one thing’s for sure, one could not exist without the other, because Antonio brings such passion to the role.  This tiny little creature should have, you would think, a squeaky voice—but out of his mouth comes this deep sound.  There some real humor created in the juxtaposition of the two.  Here’s this great actor with a massive voice, and he’s voicing this cute, furry animal.  What I love about Antonio’s performance is when he takes himself the most seriously, and Puss is doing something truer to his nature, like chasing a point of light.”
