Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua team up again in “The Equalizer 3”

Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua team up for the fifth time in “The Equalizer 3,” which ties Fuqua with the late Tony Scott as Washington’s most frequent director collaborator.

Washington says there are many reasons why he looks forward to reteaming with Fuqua: “His spiritual maturity, his collaboration, his humility, his eye,” says the actor. “There was never a question about his talent, his experience. We’re brothers – I trust him completely, he trusts me, and I'm excited about our future together. The deeper he goes, the higher he’ll go, and I'm not talking about movies.”

Fuqua returns the compliment: “Denzel constantly surprises me because the environment changes. He’s like an athlete,” says Fuqua of Washington. “If Michael Jordan is playing against the Celtics, it’s one game. If he’s playing against the Lakers, it’s another game. Each situation Denzel is in, he’s so much in the moment of the character, that there’s times I’m discovering constantly, ‘What’s he going to do?’”

Dakota Fanning reuniting with Denzel Washington in “The Equalizer 3" was a special thing to see, says director Antoine Fuqua

Since co-starring as a child actress with Denzel Washington in the 2004 film Man on Fire, Dakota Fanning has kept in touch with the veteran actor.

“I’ve known Denzel for a big part of my life,” says Fanning. “One of his daughters is one of my closest friends, so I’ve always been in the loop on what he’s up to.”

Fanning is reuniting with Washington in The Equalizer 3, where she plays a CIA analyst that Washington’s Robert McCall reaches out to for help as he begins his fight against the mafia.

Denzel Washington is back as Robert McCall, and in The Equalizer 3 McCall’s story reaches a conclusion.

In the third and final film of the trilogy, it becomes clear that while working on behalf of the people who need him has provided Robert McCall with some solace, it still means that he is a man whose life is defined by violence – and that cannot last. “He’s dealing with his demons,” says Washington, who reprises one of his signature roles. “It’s very different than the first two films; I think it’s much more personal. This movie is about his salvation and letting go of his past.”

“He's going through an internal battle,” says Antoine Fuqua, who returns to direct the third film in the trilogy and fifth overall with Washington. “He’s helping those who can't help themselves, handing out justice his way to evil people. But he’s questioning himself. Has he gone too far? Is he enjoying it too much? Is he still doing it for the right reasons?”

Producers Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal say that the reason that The Equalizer franchise has resonated so strongly with audiences is that it echoes with who Washington is in real life – minus the violence. “Robert McCall is able to take care of good people who can’t take care of themselves,” they say. “Denzel, as a human being, really believes in mission-oriented goals... I think it’s the same thing here with Robert McCall – he uses his powers to serve good. He, as both Denzel and as Robert McCall, are going to make sure that the good people are protected. The fun of it is tracking them down – he gives them all an opportunity to stop what they’re doing, and they don’t, and so he has to become the Equalizer.”

REEL DEAL: Gritty, Realistic Action Pay Off In “THE EQUALIZER”

To realize the action of Columbia Pictures’ new action-thriller “The Equalizer,” the conversations began between director Antoine Fuqua, Denzel Washington, and Keith Woulard, one of the film’s stunt coordinators.  “There’s a tendency in shooting action to shake the camera and move things around – the audience can’t tell what’s happening,” says Fuqua.  That’s just what they didn’t want to do.  “My goal was to take acting and make it action,” says Fuqua.

Fuqua’s inspiration for the way he would shoot the action scenes with McCall, Denzel’s character, was inspired by his interaction with real-life boxers.  “I happen to have a very good friend who’s a great boxer – Sugar Ray Leonard,” he notes.  “He’ll tell stories, and you’ll realize how smart a boxer can be.  Sometimes they’ll touch you – hey, how you doin’ today? – and that’s their way of checking you out, seeing if you’re in shape, if they think you’re a threat.  Or they’re watching you a certain way, to see how you move, how your body language is, what your strengths and weaknesses are.  They can pick you apart.  McCall is trained that way, too – he notices these things and uses them to his advantage.  We had to show that.”

REEL DEAL: “THE EQUALIZER” Releases Extended Clip

REEL DEAL: Flight REVIEW

I have never rode a (flying) airplane, but movies showed me how does it feel to fly up in the sky thousands of feet above the ground. I actually feel nervous when things get off the ground, and that's just even with carnival rides, what if something goes haywire while flying in the stratosphere?

Denzel Washington's movie Flight will bring viewers in a journey up in the heavens and even on the ground which is filled with drama, controversy, conflicts, and even national issues. Flight shares the story of an ill-fated passenger plane which broke down in mid-air and is heading for a free fall. William Whitaker (Denzel) or Whip is the captain of the plane does the unlikely move to invert the plane and made an emergency landing saving a lot of lives. Yet controversy follows after he is accused of drinking alcohol before the flight.

The event leads to a very complicated turn of events and an encounter with unlikely characters which most would be his friends and also his enemies. The movie is made with a lot of human strengths, struggles and weaknesses. Even for non-fliers like me, have felt the nerve wracking feel of falling from the sky and getting in between the pressures of the job and life itself.

Deana wants to discuss putting their son through a private school, but Whip doesn't want to discuss it at the moment, claiming he'll talk to her about it when he gets back to Atlanta.

REEL DEAL: Safehouse REVIEW

The world indeed is a dangerous place, no one is exempted on what could happen to any of us in natural or man made events. Even with the toughest security can be breached, nowhere is a safe place.

Oscar® winner Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in the action-thriller Safe House.  Washington plays the most dangerous renegade from the CIA, who comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run.  When the South African safe house he’s remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative (Reynolds) escapes with him.  Now, the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead.

For the past year, Matt Weston has been frustrated by his inactive, backwater post in Cape Town.  A “housekeeper” who aspires to be a full-fledged agent, the loyal company man has been waiting for an opportunity to prove himself.  When the first and only occupant he’s had proves to be the most dangerous man he’s ever met, Weston readies for duty.

ROSARIO DAWSON IS UNSTOPPABLE IN A MAN’S WORLD

Inspired by actual events, “Unstoppable” is an adrenaline rush fueled by director Tony Scott’s signature mark of propulsive action rooted in the reality of ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances. A veteran train engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor (Chris Pine) race the clock to stop an unmanned runaway train – effectively a missile the size of a skyscraper -- and prevent disaster in a heavily populated area.

As Frank and Will face imminent danger, their one solace is the voice of Yardmaster Connie Hooper (Rosario Dawson) over the radio. Stationed back at Mingo Yard, where the runaway locomotive began as a simple coaster, Connie is a voice of reason and direction throughout the chaos. “Connie represents a different face of the railroad,” says screenwriter Bomback. “She is someone who could eventually become part of the executive ranks because she’s extremely capable and used railroading as an opportunity to take control of her fate.”
“Connie is a strong woman,” says actress Rosario Dawson. “She is confident and assertive without being arrogant or bitchy which is an absolute necessity if you want to be successful in a traditionally male role. The train yard is definitely a man’s world.”
“It was a challenge to make sure that Connie’s voice could be heard by all the men around her,” she continues. “Not just the men she supervises, but also the corporate executives. She has to be heard and accepted because lives are always at stake in her job.”

Even before Connie learns that a train has left her yard unmanned that brisk morning, her day is off to a less than stellar start. As she arrives late for work, she encounters an insipid safety inspector from the Federal Railroad Administration sent to assist her in hosting a field trip of elementary school children learning about train safety, a time-consuming endeavor about which she is wholly unenthusiastic. When the assistant yardmaster finds humor in her misery, she’s further discouraged and realizes this day is going to be particularly long. If she only knew.

“She’s the voice of reason in very dramatic circumstances,” adds Dawson. “Even though she has to follow the protocol outlined in some dusty manual, she has to get a grip, think on her feet and move forward and make decisions with a confidence she doesn’t necessarily have when it comes to a train the size of the Chrysler Building moving like a missile into dense population.”
All three lead actors admit that the unstoppable train – the 777 – steals every scene. “The 777 is the real star of the movie,” says Washington. “It’s the shark in ‘Jaws.’ It’s the monster in the room that’s going to destroy people, towns -- anything and everything in its path. Chris Pine and I are just side men. It’s all about the train, that’s why it’s called Unstoppable.”

“Connie and her team back at the Yardstation are looking at a wall of blinking lights,” explains Dawson. “Every one of those lights is someone’s home, a farm, a school, a business. Frank and Will are out there watching the actual houses and businesses blur past them. They’re driving backwards down the track in a train that’s rattling so much it’s almost falling apart. But they don’t need us to be scared for them; they need us to provide information so that they can make educated choices. Each group has its vision of what it’s experiencing and it’s only by communicating that the two worlds blend.”

Dawson (Yardmaster Connie Hooper) has garnered praise for her numerous leading roles with today’s hottest film actors and directors, making her one of Hollywood’s most sought after leading ladies. Dawson received a Satellite Award for her performance as Mimi Marquez in the film “Rent.” She was honored again in 2007 at ShoWest, where she was named Supporting Actress of the Year.

Recently awarded as Best Actress in a Motion Picture at the 2009 NAACP Image Awards for her performance in “Seven Pounds” (opposite Will Smith) and the Half-Life Award at the 2008 Cine Vegas International Film Festival alongside Don Cheadle, Viggo Mortensen and Sam Rockwell, Dawson’s other notable films include the hit teen movie “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief,” “Eagle Eye,” “Killshot,” “Grindhouse,” “Death Proof,” “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” “Alexander,” “Shattered Glass,” “25th Hour,” “He Got Game” and “Men in Black 2.”
“Unstoppable” opens November 12 (Friday) in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
