English band Nothing But Thieves gained the respect from pillars of the modern rock community – among them Muse, who took them out as support band on their 2016 arena tour.

Nothing But Thieves consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Conor Mason, guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown, guitarist and keyboardist Dominic Craik, bassist Philip Blake, and drummer James Price. The alternative rock band’s music celebrates eclecticism and songcraft. “We weren't setting out to write something completely different, but I would say we experimented more, tried to push the boundaries, tried to capture something that pushed us outside of our comfort zone,” says guitarist Dom Kraik. “If a song made us feel a bit odd, that's good.” In fact, it’s that spirit that motivates them. “The mantra of the band is to not regurgitate any ideas,” says frontman Conor Mason.

Gloc-9 is not one to brag about his work because he believes that it should speak for itself. Yet there is no underestimating his 20 years in the music industry, especially since it is not just about being rapper and performer, but also about being a songwriter.

It also is about having struggled to get to this point where he has nothing to prove, and now realizing that he has in fact put in the work and must only compete with himself. “Kung titingnan ko ‘yung 20 years, parang siguro ang biggest lesson ay ang magpatuloy lang do’n sa gusto mo talagang gawing mga kanta. Kasi siyempre maraming kailangan i-consider minsan, pero kung gano’n kasi, baka hindi ka na makakasulat,” he says.

REEL DEAL: Neomanila REVIEW

One of the feature films of QCinema directed by Mikhail Red, the director of the Filipino Oscar Entry Birdshot, Neomanila sparks interest what does this title mean. For me, I immediately think of a sci-fi story or a possible future timeline. However it proved to mean another thing.

Neomanila is something I was not initially expecting yet this is one of the things that gives mystery to the film. Set in present time, with all the present issues of society, and the reality they represent is very close. EJK, Drugs, Crime, Sex, and Money runs around which many films have used many times, now is interpreted by Mikhail Red now rising an acclaimed director.

There are a a great pool of artists for Neomanila which includes Eula Valdez, Rocky Salumbides, and Timothy Castillo. They play Irma, Raul, and Toto respectively; specifically linked to violence and a murder network which works deep in the shadows.

Probably the only value you can get from this is the value of family, and the others are hard hitting life lessons which had grave consequences.  The film was painfully moving, yet indeed a masterpiece for Red. They went to be as real as possible with scenes that we are familiar with; the slums, the drugs, and possibly the violence.

They are the Girls of the Moment, living blissful lives basking in their popularity. One night, together with their love interests, Enzo, Jag, and Andre summon a trio of vengeful spirits with Bea’s Ouija Board, and this triggers a succession of disturbing supernatural events in relation to a crime committed 50 years ago. The spirits haunt the girls and their partners until they are forced to connect with a blind medium named Anita to help the spirits seek justice and eternal peace.

REEL DEAL: Mga Gabing Kasing Haba ng Hair Ko REVIEW

This film with an interestingly catchy title is not just the regular queer themed movie as it has also made it to the Busan International Film Festival this October. Mga Gabing Kasing Haba ng Hair Ko (Those Long Haired Nights) presents 3 stories of transgenders who live and work in the red light district and they each have a story to tell.

As long as their strands, the life of Tuesday (Daclan), Amanda (Falcon), and Barbie (Salumbides) are a mix of fun and tragic consequences. We might be familiar to them as they reveal themselves with the people they work and relate to. Sex and drugs is expected but there is also some scenes that surprise the viewers.

Though I was also expecting the actors playing transgenders to be "lady like" appeal, they did great in portraying their roles despite looking buff. Each has his/her own charm with their first impression, to the way they progress to their own stories. A mix of light and heavy moments makes its a journey to their lives though we wanted to see more, probably a short backstory.

REEL DEAL: Thor Ragnaork REVIEW

I was originally not a Thor fan, but this iconic superhero played by Chris Hemsworth eventually became one of my favorite avengers film. This third installment of series starring the god of thunder takes on a different ambiance as it shifted from the gloomy theme of Thor: The Dark World to a hilarious yet pivotal turning point with Thor: Ragnarok.

Just a few months after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which is banks on comedy to capture its audience, it was with this approach that Ragnarok was featured in its trailers. Since they do happen in the vast space, it seems fitting to align themselves towards their theme and would gravitate both of the movies together.

As Ragnarok means the end of the world, a new god is introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her name is Hela played by Cate Blanchett. As the goddess of death, she is really a foe to be feared who could bring Asgard to ruins. Thor in the meantime find himself in a odd predicament where is made a warrior like gladiators.

Taika Waititi directed this film which is said to be his first hollywood movie. As a comedian himself, the comedic timing was on cue despite some are recurring jokes. It was really hilarious and made use of the outer space realm to introduce more alien life rather than focusing more on Earth.
