For the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival, it would not be complete without an entry from Regal Entertainment, which is a key institution with Pinoy entertainment. This year was also a sad year for them with the passing of their Matriarch, Mother Lily Monteverde. Though her legacy continues with their entry for this year, MY FUTURE YOU.
This was one of the last project Mother Lily greenlit before she passed, giving tremendous faith and opportunity to the two lead stars Seth Fedelin and Francine Diaz. This dramatic comedy brings two strangers Lex (Seth) and Karen (Francine) meeting online during a comet event. As the two become closer, they soon realized that they live in two different periods. This opens up opportunities for them to change their past and futures which brings them to affect their lives in good and bad ways.
When the teaser and trailer was introduced months ago, many have pointed out the similarities with the Japanese anime film Kimi No Nawa (Your Name) given that it also has the two-time period romantic plot plus the shooting star (or Comet) is seen as the key visual for their marketing materials. However, after watching, I did see the differences yet found it has more similarities with the anime Steins; Gate because of the time period interventions leading to changes in the future.
The love team up of FranSeth, has also matured into a more serious roles as the story deals with more family connections and drama. And for a film that tackles with the time as it's plot, they have weaved it well connecting a lot of its points giving that eureka moment when things are starting to get clear. Though I feel they could have improved on the CGI scenes because it feels like a TV series rather than a movie.
Regal is known to experiment on a lot of things for their films, and My Future You has some which mostly gave the film its own charm. The romantic chemistry of FranSeth is already a given and will draw fans to watch the film. This is the only 2024 MMFF film to get a G rating from the MTRCB, which opens up more viewers to view the film. And with its family-centric feel and story, this can draw viewers who just want to have a feel-good time.
You might notice minimal details which can be plot holes, but they don't affect the story that much. I maybe just overthinking given the complexity of time period plot. But generally, the film delivers what it is intended to, bring out the romance, and show the value of time and family.
My Future You is produced by Regal Entertainment and distributed by Regal Films. It will be showing in Philippine cinemas December 25 as part of the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival.
