It is actually refreshing and inspiring to see a regional theater group venture into the theater circle of Metro Manila in which the majority of stage plays are seen. YPC Stage is from Biñan City which started as a small group and now has grown to make a gamble to stage it on a bigger platform. Mapanakit! Mga Dulang Bittersweet is written acclaimed playwright Eljay Castro Deldoc, it is made up of 3 one act plays: “Ang Liknayan ng ating mga Katawan”, “Ilihan at Kalingaw”, and “Ganito ang Pinangarap kong Kasal.” Directed by BJ Borja, he pairs the actors of YPC Stage with established stage actors to show that they are on par with each other and makes great chemistry. Each play has its own charm and interpretation of the word “Mapanakit” (hurtful) which makes it relatable. And it would definitely wreck you if you find yourself in all three. They prove that there is potential talent beyond the Metro, new stories that are worthy to be told on stage, and elevates provincial theater to gain experience and exposure.
In “Ang Liknayan ng ating mga Katawan,” Ross Pesigan and Jury Sanchez show a student-teacher interaction that involves a lot of scientific terms and theories that tries to connect the dots between the two. The tension between the two is exciting, though it would also depend on the audience if they are overwhelmed by the terms that might be too technical despite being defined in the dialogues. Nevertheless, it was successful in luring us into the mystery and tension of their relationship which might also be controversial because of their age gap and role.
"Ilihan at Kalingaw" stars Gab Pangilinan as Ilihan and Euden Moje as Kalingaw which I say has a surprising stage design. The story is rooted with fantasy and mythology that also contains a forbidden love between the characters. The script is laced with poetic Filipino words that indeed have the romantic flair and charm. I believe that the lore can be expanded yet this is also enough to make us feel the romance and heartbreak with a magical ending.
For “Ganito ang Pinangarap kong Kasal” starring Kokoy de Santos, Phi Palmos, and Loudette Barias is a very no-holds-barred story of friendship, betrayal, and trust between the characters which starts fun and quirky but gets emotional and serious as it progresses. The extras for this play were also very fun which I believe are mostly students. The chemistry between Kokoy, Phi and Loudette are so natural which works best with their story of love and friendship. And that bond also makes it hard when their love is put to the test.
Overall, each play has its own interpretation of Mapanakit and stories that defies science, shows the mythology of love, and challenges our relationship with the ones we love. It is also a win for YPC Stage who took a chance to go beyond their city and embrace their potential to show that Biñan indeed has theatrical talent that needs more opportunities and exposure.
