REVIEW: Lakambini Gregoria De Jesus - The Tragedy of a Katipunera

This film has been in development for more than a decade, and in the 150th birthyear of Gregoria De Jesus, producer Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil felt that this year is the perfect time to finish and screen the life of the woman leader of the Katipunan.

Played by three actresses; Lovi Poe, Elora Españo, and Gina Pareno, it shows the different points of her life which were filled with struggles and tragedies from the Philippine revolution to the American commonwealth. It also includes great actors like Rocco Nacino who plays Andres Bonifacio, Paulo Avelino is Julio Nakpil, and the late Spanky Manikan is the older Julio Nakpil.

It is a meta-docufiction film with a dramatization of her past with commentaries from historians and descendants piecing together her story and relevance. It was a good call to go with a new direction to present a different approach as biographical films of historical figures are on the rise. The format of the film did surprise me on how historical characters and their predicaments relate too familiar to our modern times.

Though there will be confusion with the continuity, as they had many delays in production, schedules and more, which the director addresses at the start as a disclaimer. And with the need to have it released soon, does have noticeable parts for improvement.

With the political turmoil of today mirroring the past, it does invoke patriotism and the rage against politicians who take advantage and manipulate authority to maintain their power. And despite being women at that period, the film shows how they have the courage to be warriors and leaders along with their spouses, brothers, and friends.

The ending had an emotional blow by bringing elements together paired with the song “Lakambini’ by Ebe Dancel. As it brings together a story based on letters, historical accounts, and other information, the film tries to show the resilience of Oriang and how she deserves to be called the Lakambini.
