DUNE PART TWO - Power Comes From The Sands

Finally saw the Dune movie adaptation but started with Part 2, yet I still got the gist of how this universe works and the complex characters and world building made by Frank Herbert. And from many reviews, Dune Part One is critically acclaimed for its ensemble of great actors, production, and also an expansive movie franchise lead by its director Denis Villeneuve.

Dune Part Two continues the struggle of Paul Atreides (Timothée), to learn the ways of the dessert planet Arrakis which is known for its "spice" production and coveted by the empire. Here we see the path of having the prophesized leader by the Fremmen (Lisan al-Gaib) is coming true with Paul. His rise to power and influence along with his mother now called Reverend Mother, rises tensions across the planet along with its citizens and warrior tribes.

Though I have not watched the first film, the lore and intricacies of part two opened my curiosity about Dune which led me to watch videos about the story of Dune and the possible future they would make. The aesthetics of the film may involve a lot of sand and desert but seeing it on IMAX gives its more justice in understanding the movie.

Dune: Part Two acclaimed by critics as blockbuster masterpiece, debuting with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score.

Rave reviews are flowing in as critics praise Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated action spectacle. With a 97% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ consensus is that Dune: Part Two is visually thrilling and narratively epic.

Continuing the streak from its predecessor, Dune: Part Two lands with a success for reviewers. The Independent writes, “Dune: Part Two, like its predecessor, is a work of total sensory and imaginative immersion.” Total Film adds the movie to the hall of beloved sequels, saying, “However you cut it, Villeneuve wrangles coherence from Herbert’s unruly elements to deliver a sequel that ranks alongside The Dark Knight, The Empire Strikes Back – and Blade Runner 2049.”

Pinoy Actor Dave Bautista Back as Drax in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"

For Fil-Am actor Dave Bautista (Spectre, upcoming Blade Runner 2049), returning to the Guardians fold in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a chance to reprise a character he truly enjoys playing.

“What I really love about Drax is he’s not what you’d expect from reading the comics,” Bautista says. “Everybody was expecting one thing, and we gave them another. It makes it more interesting. It’s easy just to be the big guy who’s always growling at people and intimidating people. We’ve seen it a million times. But when you get the same guy who looks the same way but just says the most ridiculous things that make you laugh, it makes him more interesting.”

Modern Day Robin Hood In “MARAUDERS”

But as a group of FBI agents (Christopher Meloni, Dave Bautista and Adrian Grenier) dig deeper into the case — and the deadly heists continue — it becomes clear that a larger conspiracy is at play.

Bruce Willis portrays Jeffrey Hubert, president and owner of Hubert National Bank, and the target of repeated heists.  An air of entitlement and authority, he goes ballistic when the local newspaper smells a scandal beyond simple robbery.

As he delves further into the investigation, the lawman discovers a deeper purpose behind the robbery-homicides and a trail of secrets protected by the bank’s owner (Bruce Willis). Featured alongside Meloni and Willis in the high octane, smoldering thriller are Dave Bautista, Adrian Grenier, Johnathon Schaech, and Lydia Hull.

REEL DEAL: Spectre REVIEW

Daniel Craig is really getting the hang of being James Bond and has made success on the big screen. With Skyfall in 2013 a huge hit, the anticipation for the next film intensifies thus leads us to the latest installment for the Bond franchise, SPECTRE.

In the books, SPECTRE is the largest criminal organization which consists of many arms and henchmen which is James Bond's greatest battle. As expected, there will be a lot of locations where Bond will find his foes, secrets, alliances and of course ladies to pursue.

Daniel Craig's style of portraying James Bond has indeed grew into him and definitely different from his predecessors.  However Spectre is not that as progressive as Skyfall, but it never failed in bringing action and thrill throughout the film and also a lot of explosions and hot kissing.

As 2012's Skyfall drew to a close, the filmmakers introduced the man who would take over the role of the iconic character M: actor Ralph Fiennes inheriting the part from Dame Judi Dench. “I’m very aware of the legacy,” says Fiennes. “I grew up with Bernard Lee’s M and then Judi Dench made such a fantastic impression. She brought a real toughness that I’m keen to carry on.”

REEL DEAL: “GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY” Rockets To 4-Day Gross Of P104M To Claim No. 1

The heroic misfits of the universe took the Philippine box-office by storm as Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy” opened at No. 1 nationwide with an otherworldly gross of P104-M in just four days (July 31 to Aug. 3). This was announced today by a spokesman of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International which distributed the film.

Capitalizing on solid reviews and positive word-of-mouth, "Guardians" built on its P15.94-M opening day gross July 31 to achieve the sixth-biggest opening of the year, making it ahead of recent blockbusters “Godzilla” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”

REEL DEAL: Pinoy Pride Dave Bautista Is Drax In “GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY”

Filipino wrestling champion-turned-actor Dave Bautista takes on the role of Drax—a quiet yet physical brute, obsessed with avenging the death of his wife and child, in Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy” (opening in the Philippines, July 31).

The casting of Drax was a tough one for the filmmakers, as executive producer Jeremy Latcham explains: “Drax is a complex character. He is a man who seeks vengeance on the people that murdered his wife, his daughter, ruined his life and took everything from him. He is a big, bulky guy covered in tattoos, and he looks like a menace but over the course of the film as the layers are peeled back, it is revealed that he is a deeply sorrowful, regretful man who wants to make amends, a multifaceted guy with much more going on than his physicality implies. Finding a big, hulking actor who could pull off that nuanced performance was really hard.”

REEL DEAL: Chris Pratt Seeks Stardom With “GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY”

Bound-for-stardom Chris Pratt (“The LEGO Movie”) plays a brash space adventurer named Peter Quill, who was zapped into space at the age of nine, in Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

The filmmakers’ search for Peter Quill, the leader of the Guardians was extensive. Many actors were considered as contenders for the role but it was Pratt, best known for the role he plays in “Parks and Recreation,” and who was beginning to make a significant mark for scene-stealing roles in “Moneyball,” “The Five-Year Engagement” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” who triumphed. His ability to effortlessly switch between drama, comedy and action, together with his incredible charm, made him not only a great choice but also the only choice.
