REVIEW: The Batman

After delays and adjustments, finally we are able to see The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz that goes on an a mystery and suspenseful approach on the story of the Dark Knight.

With the previous adaptations follows the action adventures of Batman that seems formulaic at some point, however this film by Matt Reeves adapts a sinister plot which is laced by other elements like sound and ambiance to make it stand out.

It seems grounded with no superpowered heroes and villains in sight (yet) but it draws its thrill from the criminal influence and people that come close to our own reality. This was also the case for the Nolan trilogy which was also well received.

Robert Pattinson has indeed grown into an actor to be taken seriously now far from his vampire image. Though some may see him as a "sad boy" Bruce Wayne, that is also part of the dark charm of the film. Zoe Kravitz also invigorated my interest with Catwoman as she owned the character with action and a backstory that serves as her motivation.

Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon is also a great partner to solve the riddles which also reminds me of his role as Beetee in the Hunger Games. Paul Dano as the Riddler channels a fearful energy and is scarier with his anonymity.

The search for the Riddler may be the main plot but also leads to the encounter with other key characters like the Penguin and Catwoman. It shifts from mystery to action along the way with an eerie score that subconsciously affects the viewers to a certain point.

A lot of revelations will be shown which is the Riddler wanted with the purpose to expose the corrupt leaders of Gotham and also play with Batman with puzzles and clues.

In summary, The Batman is adapted with a dark tone and utilizes his skills as a detective. Though not faced with a global threat, the problems of Gotham alone are far complex and challenging. With situations that can happen in real life, Batman is indeed the most relatable with his challenges, and taking down his enemies is something we feel we can also do.

"The Batman" is available in theaters starting March 2 in the Philippines.
