REEL DEAL: Train To Busan REVIEW

Zombies everywhere! Well that is true enough in entertainment all around the world, and we are getting a littled tired of the undead. But comes into the scene a South Korean Film Train to Busan which was made by Next Entertainment World starring Gong Yoo and Kim Su-an.

But what is impressive about the movie is that it premiered during the Canne Film Festival along with the best films in the world. So it built a little intrigue for me if it does really deserve that spot in the festival. Although it was also proven by another thriller movie The Shallows" which also premiered in the festival as well.

So what is the deal with Korean Zombies? With all variations of zombies revealed in many movie, tv series, and comics, they came up with a theme that can ampify the horror. Put zombies on a moving train going south and the country is now in the brink of collapse. So the options and weapons to fight them are real close to nil.

An it was also a success with more than 80 Million US dollars in the box office. Initially I thought it would be similar to Wolrd War Z, but probably with the zombie swarm only but aside from that it delivered its charm like many Korean films.

REEL DEAL: Florence Foster Jenkins REVIEW

To provide entertainment is an art form and back in the days, competition was also as tough as today. But comes an odd yet brave soul who will live out a dream nobody though can be possible, her name is Florence Foster Jenkins and she is played by the award-winning actress Meryl Streep who will take her singing prowess in a unusual range.

Set during the Wolrd War II era in New York City, the war is almost over and people in the Big Apple continues on with the busy city life, one would find a special club established to provide entertainment with classical means. Madam Florence  as she is known ventures into singing on live stage to provide entertainment, but her method is really what many would expect.

Also joining Meryl are acclaimed actors  Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg who will be he biggest supporters for the dream of many singers. It may not be the tune you will be hoping for, but it provided that push to appreciate the life of the New York socialite.

Jenny Slate Lends Voice to Pomeranian in "The Secret Life of Pets"

After voicing for the sheep Bellwether in “Zootopia” – and before doing voice work as Harley Quinn in the upcoming “The LEGO Batman Movie” -- fast-rising actress Jenny Slate (“Obvious Child”) will be heard as a Pomeranian dog in Universal Pictures and Illumination's “The Secret Life of Pets,” opening in Philippine cinemas August 24.

Slate plays Gidget, a naïve, but gutsy Pomeranian who is 50% fluff, 110% tough, and a secret admirer of hero dog, Max.

In the film, Max (Louis C.K.), a quick-witted Terrier rescue who’s convinced he sits at the center of owner Katie’s universe, finds his pampered life turned upside down when she brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a sloppy, massive mess of a mongrel with zero interpersonal skills. When this reluctant canine duo finds themselves out on the mean streets of New York, they have to set aside their differences and unite against a fluffy, yet cunning, bunny named Snowball, whose army of pets are out to turn the tables on humanity…all this and making it home before Katie returns at dinnertime.

Redford, Bentley, Urban: The Men of "Pete's Dragon"‏

When Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” hits Philippine theaters on September 7th, it is sure to charm and thrill audiences, creating a whole new generation of life-long fans.

More than the adventure, “Pete's Dragon” will also showcase the talents of legendary actor Robert Redford and two of today's most sought-after character actors – Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”) and Karl Urban (“Star Trek” trilogy).

In “Pete's Dragon,” old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

“The dragon is a symbolic creature from mythology and mythology was a big deal for me as a kid growing up, so I’m a big believer in its importance,” says Redford. “I grew up in a working class environment where there were not a lot of options for entertainment, so you had to kind of create your own. And it was about a greater world and greater characters and greater creatures than I knew, so therefore, it was very, very attractive to me.”

The screen legend, who has appeared in such classic films as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Way We Were,” “The Sting” and “All the President’s Men,” has been very selective in recent years as to the roles he chooses, so director David Lowery tailored the part to fit Redford’s strengths as an actor, which encouraged him to commit to the role.

“I think the story crafted here is very human and quite interesting,” says Redford. “It is an intimate story of a father, a daughter and a boy who has survived an accident and gone into the woods, and it has a lot of magic, but at its core, it’s a very emotional, human story.”

Wes Bentley (“American Horror Story: Hotel”) was cast as Jack, the owner of the local lumber mill who is in a relationship with Grace. The idea of a forest ranger dating someone who destroys the very woods in which she works and the dichotomy it created, appealed to the actor, as it dealt with an issue that is, in fact, a real problem in the world.

Toho Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s largest film companies that produced the original Godzilla (Gojira) feature film, reboots the world’s most successful monster franchise in “Godzilla: Resurgence.”

“Godzilla: Resurgence” brings the monster back on Japan’s soil, in contemporary times, as it surfaces in the country for the first time.  In the movie, when an abandoned yacht in Tokyo Bay is attacked and the Aqua-line soon collapses, Japan’s Deputy Chief Rando Yaguchi theorizes that the damage was done by a living creature.  Soon, the country is on the run when an unidentified terrifying creature suddenly towered the city, destroying everything, even killing people in its path.  With Japan’s government officials working with special envoys and scholars, researching on the mysterious creature, the special group eventually names the dangerous creature Godzilla which is energized by nuclear fission, making it indestructible.

Legacy of Fear Reborn In Latest “BLAIR WITCH” Movie

Back in 1999, “The Blair Witch Project” became a global phenomenon and left a haunting fear of being alone in the woods.  The nearly no-budget film grossed millions and set the gold standard for found footage movies, spawning a new generation of horror fans.

“Elly Kedward, the woman accused of witchcraft and left to die in the Maryland woods in 1785, is the first recorded story of the Blair Witch legend,” says executive producer Gregg Hale.  “But the evil in those woods is much, much older than that.”                  For several years, Lionsgate had been searching for the right concept to reboot Blair Witch, as well as filmmakers who could satisfy the fans of the first film and reach a new generation of moviegoers.

Teaching farmers how to fish

About an hour or so from the city proper, Marilog does not feel like part of Davao City. Understandably, because this third congressional district where the President of the Philippines lives is still thriving with dense greenery and with fruit bearing trees. It is because of this that Marilog became a leading exporter of fruits, giving it the title “Fruit Basket of the Philippines”.

In 2013, Henry Sy, Sr.’s SM Foundation donated a variety of tree seedlings to farmers of Sitio Upper Kibangay, Barangay Suawan in Marilog. This is part of the Foundation’s program called “Grow a Million Trees”, which supports the national government’s own greening program.

Casting Talented Cats As Mr. Fuzzypants In “NINE LIVES”

From Barry Sonnenfeld, director of classic hits “Men in Black,” “The Addams Family,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “Big” comes his latest family movie event “Nine Lives” starring award-winning actors Kevin Spacey, Christopher Walken and Jennifer Garner along with Robbie Ammell and Malina Weissman.

“Nine Lives” follows the exciting life of Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey), an undeniably successful, impossibly wealthy, but unapologetic jerk. Striving to build the tallest skyscraper in the Northern Hemisphere, the daredevil billionaire will sacrifice anything — even the love of his family — to complete an architectural marvel nearly as gargantuan as his ego.  Tom’s workaholic lifestyle has alienated his long-suffering family, including his devoted wife Lara (Jennifer Garner), neglected adult son David (Robbie Amell) and starved-for-attention young daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman). When Rebecca’s 11th birthday arrives, the girl begs her father for the same present she asks for every year: a cat. Tom hates cats, but reluctantly finds himself in a magical pet shop owned by the quirky Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken). The peculiar proprietor knows exactly what Brand needs — and its name is Mr. Fuzzypants.
