Director Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp have teamed up before, most recently with the 2024 thriller Presence. This time this unconventional spy drama takes people behind the lives of elite officers who work in the shadows. The idea for Black Bag came to Koepp as he was conducting interviews on intelligence officers for the blockbuster Mission: Impossible franchise. “All the spycraft stuff was very cool, but I learned more than I ever expected about the people,” he says. “One woman told me that her job made it impossible for her to sustain a relationship. A line in the movie was inspired by my conversations with her. ‘When you can lie about everything, how do you tell the truth about anything?’”

A story, not engendered by me, but one that I have lived with, within, and dreamed about since childhood. I often felt I had the same un-jaded creative spark of a first time filmmaker when finally making the film because of the years of thought I have put into it. I feel more fortunate than ever to have had the chance to make it with my trusted team of long-time collaborators,” he says.

“Wolf Man” pays homage to classic monsters and body horror with its practical and visual effects

Bringing the Wolf Man to life is a monumental feat, and wanting to honor the original 1941 classic of the same name, director Leigh Whannell channels inspiration from horror history. . “If you think about that look that was created for Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein in 1931 or Lon Chaney’s Wolf Man in 1941, those were things that audiences had never seen,” Whannell says. “Those images have lasted because they’re so striking. Anybody dealing with monsters today lives in the shadow of these artists. Every makeup artist whose name is etched into the Hall of Fame—from Rick Baker and Rob Bottin to Stan Winston and Jack Pierce, all these artists have created something brilliant that sticks in your mind.”

From singing live, voice retraining, and getting matching tattoos, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo share their journey together as Glinda and Elphaba in “Wicked”

Wicked has always been a journey of self-discovery, and rising up against adversity, but in the heart of it all is the friendship between two young women, Glinda and Elphaba. The right actresses were critical for the film, but director Jon M. Chu and his fellow filmmakers knew instantly that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were the perfect choices.

Check out the “Singing Live” featurette here: https://youtu.be/GMRimg3C86g

From the start, their bond was unmistakable. The pair had dinner at Chu’s house, with producer Marc Platt and composer Stephen Schwartz.  “Stephen went to the piano and said to Cynthia and Ari, ‘Shall we sing, ‘For Good’?” Chu says. “Cynthia and Ari didn’t rehearse it. They’d never done it together. They sang it, and my four-year-old daughter’s jaw dropped to the floor. No one has ever seen two powerhouses like this before. It’s been beautiful to see how well connected they are.”

Lupita Nyong’o (best known for her roles in Star Wars, Black Panther, and most recently A Quiet Place: Day One) goes on an unexpected adventure in the latest animation from Dreamworks, The Wild Robot. The robot Roz (voiced by Nyong’o), finds herself stranded in the wilderness and unsuited for the journey as a machine for futuristic city life. . “I hope that audiences relish the beauty, adventure and emotion of this movie,” Nyong’o says. “It’s not afraid to pull at your heartstrings, and I hope audiences enjoy that ride. Ultimately, the message of The Wild Robot, both the book and the film, is that kindness is an innate quality we should hone, and there’s value in staying true to yourself while embracing change.”

The Wild Robot is ultimately a story of life, loss, and unexpected bonds, as Roz is thrust into the role of a parent when a baby gosling, Brightbill, hatches and bonds with her. Voicing Brightbill is Heartstopper actor Kit Connor, with him bringing complexity to the role. “Brightbill is on a journey of self-discovery,” Connor says. “At the start of the film, Roz is an unfeeling robot. Brightbill teaches her about kindness and love, and in turn, their mother-son relationship continues to grow stronger as the story progresses. Their evolving connection not only brings warmth to the story but also emphasizes the power of empathy and understanding in overcoming challenges. And that love and kindness that Roz learns eventually helps them both succeed. Throughout the film, we see him growing more confident and learning to love the things that make him different.”

Step into the world of The Wild Robot as it opens in Philippine cinemas on October 9.
