Cindy-Lou Prevents "The Grinch" from Stealing Christmas

In both the original Dr. Seuss book, Cindy-Lou Who is a tiny toddler, “no more than two,” whose interaction with a Santa-Claus-disguised Grinch revolves only around questioning him about why Santa is taking their Christmas tree in the middle of the night.

In Universal Pictures and Illumination’s new version of The Grinch, she’s a little older, and she’s on a mission to trap Santa to ask him to help her over-worked, over-tired mother. “We wanted to find a character who was the antitheses of the Grinch,” producer Chris Meledandri says. “Someone who was incredibly helpful and embodied the optimism that childhood allows us to have. She’s a very positive character, but there’s a certain wisdom to her as well. We talked a lot about why her path was going to cross with Santa’s — or the-Grinch-as-Santa — and giving her a sense of mission and intention. Her determination puts these two characters on paths that we know are going to collide.”

"Despicable Me 3" Super-Villain is Former '80s Child Star

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's new comedy adventure Despicable Me 3 features a new addition to the franchise: Balthazar Bratt, a formidable super-villain who has been plotting to destroy Hollywood after his TV show was canceled.

Once mocked and shunned after his TV series was canceled—due to his quick onset of puberty—Bratt has become obsessed with everything from his glory days. Now embodying his former role’s villainous traits, Bratt surrounds himself with everything ’80s—re-creating the show’s gadgets and vehicles for plotting his revenge.

In classic Illumination fashion, the character is just as defined by his Machiavellian schemes as he is his ridiculousness. “Balthazar Bratt has taken on this child-actor persona as his villain persona,” says cast member Steve Carell who provides the voices of brothers Gru and Dru. “There is also a silly madness to him, and he uses ’80s components as a part of his villainy. The bubble gum he chews become an extremely effective weapon, he dresses in a purple outfit with padded shoulders and parachute pants, and he dispatches people with dance fights.”

"Despicable Me 3" Characters Amplify Their Lovable Nature

Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri believes that “when we leave the movie theater, it is the relationship with the film’s characters that determines how that film will live on in our imaginations.”

This cannot be truer with the studio's new adventure-comedy Despicable Me 3, which continues the story of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions.

The franchise's beloved characters once again return for another memorable story on family, as they are joined by new characters for a richer, funnier tale.

Quirky Live-Action Director Tries Animation with "Sing"

While Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri has primarily worked with filmmakers who began their careers in short-form animation, the studio's latest comedy Sing marks the first time he has partnered with a filmmaker from live action for an Illumination feature.

Meledandri, who was certain that writer-director Garth Jennings’ unique path would bring distinctive charm to the collaboration, states that their connection began long before Sing’s writer/director even knew it: “I fell in love with Garth’s independent film, Son of Rambow. I felt that he was such an authentic storyteller, and I loved that it was based on his own childhood as an amateur filmmaker.” As well, Jennings’ extensive experience directing music videos informed a curious perspective and grasp of the power of music in telling visual stories. “I had a hunch that Garth’s sensibility would be a perfect fit for this idea that’s preoccupied me.”
