There’s a lot of dynamism in that scene, which I think prepares the audience for the energy of what’s coming next,” says Vaniček.

A curious list of suspects is investigated by an even more unusual group of woolly crime-solvers in The Sheep Detectives. The rolling green hills of George’s (Hugh Jackman) farm are the perfect home for his devoted flock. The charming shepherd has a nightly routine of reading murder mysteries to the fluffy audience, and their peaceful life is shattered when the sheep discover George dead one morning. Determined to catch their shepherd’s killer, the flock gets on the case, with some humans tagging along to help.

To complement the all-star voice cast for the sheep, we also meet a colorful cast of human characters played by actors Nick Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Emma Thompson, and more. Some of them suspicious, some of them curious, and all of them a part of a great whodunit.

Amaze. Amaze. Amaze! Epic space adventure Project Hail Mary launched with the highest-grossing film debut of the year, landing at a $140.9 million box office opening weekend. The film opened to $80.5 million in North America, and captured an additional $60.4 million from international markets. The film is an adaptation of The Martian author Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, directed by duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. 

Project Hail Mary also had a stellar opening weekend in the Philippines, earning PHP 29,258,184  on its first five days. This marks the biggest Hollywood opening weekend of 2026. Propelled by excellent word of mouth, Project Hail Mary is also the biggest Hollywood original non-franchise film opening since Oppenheimer.

Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s in space. As he slowly recollects his memories, he’s reminded of his mission: To save a dimming sun and prevent the Earth from entering an extinction event. An unexpected encounter leads to an alien ally he names “Rocky,” and together they do what it takes to save their respective homes.

A journey light years away from our own galaxy awaits in Project Hail Mary, the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s (The Martian) hit sci-fi novel of the same name. Long time collaborators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are at the captain’s seat as producers and directors of the film. The duo received the manuscript for Weir, and consumed it in record time. “We read it in 24 hours,” Miller says. “I stayed up all night. I think I went to bed at 5am because I had to find out what happened.”

Layton is no stranger to stories of people living outside the shadow of the law, and he saw the perfect setting for his next endeavor in Crime 101. “I felt like many of the characters are slightly trapped in that sense of ‘I'm never going to feel good about my place in the world unless I have this,’” Layton says. “L.A. is a place that really nurtures that sense of: if you want to really be somebody and feel like you are of value, you need to have all the external trappings of great success. I think status anxiety is a constant thing.”

Mercy rises to the top of the American box office in its debut, the futuristic action thriller dethroning Avatar: Fire and Ash’s five-week reign. Mercy is set in a not too distant future, where Det. Chris Raven (Chris Pratt)  stands accused of killing his wife. He has ninety minutes to prove his innocence to the A.I. judge Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson), or face the death penalty.

The cast talks about how the film makes use of the current rise of AI, with Chris Pratt explaining the progression of Judge Maddox’s character. “Chris Raven’s story is his attempt to establish he’s not guilty while being forced to come to terms with his demons,” says Pratt, “but an equally incredible arc is the character of Judge Maddox, who feels like a cold, calculating computer program but through the course of the film actually becomes more sentient. She’s a character who essentially is trying to hide the humanity creeping up inside of her programming.”
