It feels like a reboot with his life as the memory of his existence is wiped from everyone, he indeed has gone back to being the friendly neighborhood crusader. But this also feels so heavy for him despite being good at his job. He also now discovers new changes to his body which he fears would make him a monster, now also faced with a new foe that has a scary power he is not familiar with. It is great to see him interact with new and old heroes, yet heartbreaking to interact with his best friend and lover affected by the spell.
The action becomes more compact and intense laced with some mystery. The emotion comes from the lessons of the past and the challenge to push beyond even when everything is hopeless. Having The Punisher/ Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) interact with Spider-Man was fun and contrasting yet very New Yorker for both of them. I thought that Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) was something to add a touch of Avenger yet he and the Hulk provide that brain and brawn power needed to push the plot further toward the real goal. And we also have Sadie Sink’s character which was indeed a surprise which seemed small at first yet pivotal at the final act.
There are also the poster villains of the Scorpion and The Hand which I thought might be the final boss but they indeed put up a fight for Spider-Man which had an amazing fight sequence. It is also probably the film that shows the city with its people and soul. The citizens that love and cared for their hero, and the city alive with the endless activities that keep it moving. Indeed it is a brand new day for Spider-Man, something new with something old just like New York City, despite the struggles and imperfections, becomes the hero everyone needs.
