Anya Taylor-Joy is ferocious as Furiosa in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

“There’s something resolute, highly determined, and ultimately ferocious that’s in her. And that’s seen on the screen,” director George Miller describes watching Anya Taylor-Joy in action as the titular character in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the latest installment in the epic post-apocalyptic Mad Max franchise.

Miller admires the way that Taylor-Joy added to Furiosa’s character, forming it with her own understanding of the vicious warrior. “Anya was a wonderful collaborator whose contributions added to the depth of the character, making it her own. There's no question that she brought something that’s ferocious to the movie—whether it’s in her or not, she found that in herself. And it’s something that I sensed in her work previous to working with her.”

Filipinos were in for a wild ride as Warner Bros. Pictures, in anticipation of the opening of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," unveiled the Furiosa jeepney, which offered free rides to commuters on Labor Day, May 1, as a celebration of all workers who use the essential vehicle in their daily commute to work. The one-of-a-kind ride is a concept that explores both the post-apocalyptic look of the Mad Max vehicles and the ingenuity of the Filipino design. The jeepney activation pays homage to the iconic Philippine mode of transport and hopes to honor it by giving it a global spotlight.

Chris Hemsworth is twisted as Dementus in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

“He understood the character straight away,” was what director George Miller said as he watched Chris Hemsworth read the screenplay for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. In the highly anticipated expansion to the Mad Max universe, Chris Hemsworth plays Dementus, the tyrannical warlord that kidnaps a child that would later become the legendary Furiosa.

Hemsworth has such an understanding of the character that director Miller thought was ideal for the role. “He understood his character such that I began to rely on him whenever he would say, ‘I think Dementus would do this…’ And suddenly, it became more than serving his performance or the characters, but serving the deeper narrative of the story.”

The highly anticipated “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” will be revealed in the presence of the director and the cast, led by Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke, on the occasion of an Out of Competition gala screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière at the Palais des Festivals on Wednesday May 15.

Originally filmed in the Australian Outback, this revisited “Western on wheels” describes a dystopian world where speed and movement are just as synonymous with life energy as with death as a result of resource depletion, offering the viewer a dose of adrenaline rarely equalled on the big screen.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released its jam-packed, epic movie schedule for the year. 

With highly anticipated titles including “Dune: Part Two,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Joker: Folie Á Deux,” the studio is gearing up for another big year in cinema following a 2023 that saw some of Hollywood’s biggest global success stories. “Wonka,” a now beloved prequel to Roald Dahl’s classic, continues to inspire moviegoers to revisit a world of pure imagination, and has surpassed $500 million at the global box office less than two months after its release. And who can forget “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s homage to the classic doll that tickled the world pink to the tune of $1.4 billion (not to mention tugged at most everyone’s heartstrings)?

On January 8, Encore Films, through Warner Bros. Pictures, released Studio Ghibli’s “The Boy and the Heron,” the first Hayao Miyazaki film to be shown on the big screen in the Philippines. The film recently won the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature and is one of the frontrunners for the Academy Award in the same category.
