Bullet Train - On Track To Slay and Survive

It was quite a surprise that Brad Pitt came back to making films with the announcement of Bullet Train months ago. It was based on the book Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka, adapted into a screenplay by Zak Olkewicz, and directed by David Leitch.

It stars Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Bad Bunny, Karen Fukuhara, Logan Lerman, and Sandra Bullock, this takes place in Japan known for its Shinkansen or the Bullet Train. Though there have been many movies about trains and gangsters, Bullet Train also blends some elements of mystery and dark comedy.

Brad Pitt is Ladybug which is his code name as he enters the train. The characters are mostly named with code names with each having an interesting background and skills of assassination in various ways. Imagine a train full of mobsters, assassins, and other dangerous people and are bound by one person, The White Death.

David Leitch also directed Deadpool 2 and was also a stuntman working with Brad Pitt before. This makes it interesting as the film is very violent and gory which is something that he is known for. The Japanese elements aesthetic comes first yet it is also driven by the build up of mystery with the connection of the characters and plot reveal.

Though there are flashbacks that might seem cheesy, it does contribute to the intensity of the plot eventually. The main characters do have that charisma that people would like to root for, except for the Prince which was really annoying yet a scary foe.

The diverse characters makes the film entertaining from start to finish, though many think there could be whitewashing with the characters, I still think that they made slight changes yet they diversified it to get more audience from different walks of life.

Honestly, I really enjoyed the film for its fast-paced action, stunning visuals, and the dialogues that make a statement. I’ve considered it as one of the top 5 movies for 2022. Also watch out for great cameos!

Bullet Train will be showing in theaters August 10 in the Philippines.
