In anticipation for the celebration of the Metro Manila Film Festival, we got to see the special advanced screening of Green Bones by GMA Pictures. From the success of their last year's entry Firefly, this probably gave them the inspiration to submit a new entry for this year's MMFF which is now on its golden anniversary.
Written by National Artist Ricky Lee and Anj Atienza, and directed by Zig Dulay, Green Bones is a suspenseful drama which stars Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid.
It tells the story of Dom (Trillo) who is convicted with the murder of his sister and niece living in a penal colony where Xavier (Madrid) enters as a new prison officer driven with hatred to criminals, especially murderers like Dom. Dom is known in the island for being helpful and has a good track record that can lead to his parole. However, this does not sit well with Xavier and keeps a watchful eye on what are Dom's true intentions.
I really love Zig Dulay’s vision for the movie, especially the cinematography which shows tension in tight shots and calm and peace with the wide shots. The drama was built up well leading to the many reveals of Dom's past and present. Ruru portrayed Xavier as someone blinded by revenge in pursuit of justice, thus he is too focused on Dom and what he might up to. Dennis, meanwhile, gave a spectrum of emotional performance in this movie which is the secret in elevating the drama to bring tears out of our eyes.
Also, the film shows the humanity behind the people deprived of liberty, the hope that they can change despite their past, and how flawed the justice system that still continues. Though fixing it cannot be done overnight, the awareness of their situation can ripple changes in the future.
Green Bones will be showing in cinemas December 25 as one of the entries for the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival. It also stars Mikoy Morales, Royce Cabrera, Sofia Pablo, Sienna Stevens, Kylie Padilla, Pauline Mendoza, Gerhard. Acao, Raul Morit, Victor Neri, Ruby Ruiz, and Enzo Osorio. Green Bones is also distributed by Columbia Pictures for Sony Pictures Releasing International.
