DC Studios’ Superman directed by James Gunn has the honor and pressure of being the first major film in the DC Studio Cinematic Universe. Having Superman as the first of the many DC reboots, the expectations were mixed due to the hit or miss success of the previous movies of the DCEU. Now we have a new Superman with David Corenswet which we also attended the world tour that kicked off here in Manila.
The hype was indeed there, though the question still is how the public will feel with this new iteration of the character that has become so complex, yet can be molded into a masterpiece when done right. We were again introduced to new faces of Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and more. Plus there is also a sample of a future Justice League with Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Mister Terrific.
The red trunks and the bright costumes are the least of my concerns in the movie as the story and legacy matters most to make this film iconic and retain in the hearts and minds of its viewers. Like Gunn’s previous works, It has his signature style of comedy along with the entertaining action scenes, and a scene that tries to be that iconic part of the movie.
The cast was indeed fun, yet it also feels crowded as they are just briefly defined with their origin and their roles. Yet I found three of them, excluding Superman (Corenswet), who stood out and got my attention. And they are Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Guy Gardener (Nathan Fillion). David Corenswet has indeed embraced his character for both Clark Kent and Superman which makes him the new Superman of this generation.
The movie still has some things that it can improve for the next sequels and future films, but they did something really refreshing and brought Superman out into the sun again. I also love that cameos and end credits will now be a staple for DC Studios.
The DC universe is really challenging to bring to live action, yet the message it wants to share is clear. Here we celebrate Superman’s humanity, kindness, dedication, and his longing for love and community.
