The wait was worth it.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” director Tim Burton’s follow-up to his 1988 classic horror-comedy “Beetlejuice,” had its world premiere on the opening night of the Venice Film Festival on August 28 – 36 years after the first movie was released. The long-in-the-works sequel, which screened out of competition, delighted the audience and earned a nearly four-minute standing ovation for Burton and his cast – led by Beetlejuice himself Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, both also reprising their roles in the original, and new cast members Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe.

Director Tim Burton is very happy with the new cast and characters in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” sequel to his 1988 horror-comedy classic “Beetlejuice.

The celebrated director appreciated that everyone was collaborative. “It’s like we’re doing this thing that nobody really knows what we’re doing – and within that framework, everybody is trying to make it something,” says Burton. “It was a joy to be on the set and go, ‘Hey, try this. Try that.’ And they all tried stuff.”

The Juice is loose, Baby!

Back once again in his signature black-and-white stripes, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) – the trickster demon and shapeshifting bio-exorcist – finds a way back to the Deetz family (particularly Lydia, his one who got away), oozing his signature kind of dead(ly) charm, to create chaos, raise a ruckus, and otherwise just be his ghoulish and ghastly self, in the sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” directed by Tim Burton, with original cast members Keaton, Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz) and Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz) joining newcomers Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Belluci and Willem Dafoe.

“It’s great when you see people that you haven’t seen for a while, and then you go back into it,” says Burton. “I didn’t realize it’s been like decades. You know, it felt like yesterday, and it’s quite amazing when that happens. It was great. Honestly, it was strangely emotional seeing them all together again. But that’s what made it a special thing.”
