Rampant (2018) - Zombies In The Joseon Era

With the zombie genre getting too saturated with repeated themes and styles, here comes Rampant which brings a whole new perspective of zombies as they make rampage during the old days. Known to be the Joseon Era for Koreans, it is a period of tense politics, struggling stability and tension with the Royal family. Imagine the chaos when a zombie swarm starts to grow at that time.

Produced by Next Entertainment World, who also made the block buster "Train To Busan"takes another shot with the undead and this time having them in the past makes it an interesting story to tackle. Leading the cast is Hyun Bin as Lee Chung the prince who came home from Qing after hearing the news of his brother's death. But he loves Qing more than his home and not interested to be a successor of the King.

However a mysterious sickness has spread which makes the dead rise again and hungry for blood, and it is spreading fast. Prince Lee Chung finds himself trapped with the undead, the political turmoil, and family crisis which could also mean the downfall of the kingdom. Rampant just brought together the complexity of period films with the thrill and excitement of zombie movies. A refreshing concept, yet there still things it can improve on if ever there would be a sequel.

Uncle Drew - Best Sports Comedy of the Year!

When basketball is life, it remains even as time passes by. As a tradition of sports movies, Uncle Drew brings a new age movie about legends that would never retire. Starring real NBA players like Kyrie Irving, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson and Lisa Leslie, the film was brought to the screen with Pepsi Productions.

Uncle Drew, a known legend of Streetball in New York gets into the ambition of Team Manager Dax to win the Rucker Classic Cup with the large championship prize. They brings together old, yet incredible team which haven't played on court in decades but still got their talent embedded into their system.

The journey of bringing together the team was the real challenge in the film as most of them completely retired from the game and have their own individual lives away from the sport. Uncle Drew tries his best to convince them to join the team, and they obliged. Though the general plot is predictable, there are some moments that it works with the comedy which is what the movie aims to be.

REEL DEAL: Satan's Slaves REVIEW

Asian horror is back and it's Indonesia's time to showcase their story of death, mystery and the ocult. This year, they have launched the successful Satan's Slaves (Pengabdi Setan) in theaters September. It is now known as the higest grossing Indonesian horror film of all time. The reason is beacuse it has great elements of a horror film. It was very effective in bringing out the fear with the cinematography and perfect thrill timing.

The film has great WTF moments, and I could say one of the best horror films of the year. It was quite punishing for me not to give in to the jumpscares, and I want to watch it again.

An 80's remake of the same title managed to make a big hit in Indonesia. It got great reviews in Indonesia and Malaysia and continues to spread to other countries. Being part of the same Asian region, the story and characters seems familiar to Filipino horror films yet it is more refined, aesthetically thrilling and has some elements familiar which establishes relations to its viewers.
