MUSIC LYF: Opera Belles Live!

OPERA BELLES
launched their debut album under Sony Music

Who says opera is dead? well not for these gals, they proven that being a operatic singer can make it big amidst the pop charts. Operabelles gives songs that enchants the heart and also soothes the soul. I used to listen to operating singers lie Charlotte Church was back, and also loved classical opera. And they made a very nice impact to the OPM scene by sharing these songs among the popular pop and rock songs that is the trend now.
They launched their self titled album in Eastwood city mall also bearing their carrier single SUNDO which is already topping OPM charts in radio stations. And they are also now on their way in making their first music video. Included in their debut CD are songs that most of us can relate since they are pop songs with an operatic twist.
Opera Belles is composed of Allison Tanner, Lara Maigue and Jam Valdes.

Allison started singing when she was 8 years old and was trained at the University of the Philippines Extension Program where she was introduced to opera and classical music. She is currently a sophomore Pharmacy student at Centro Escolar University. She describes recording the album as “like a newborn ---- so many bright new learning – theoretically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.”

Jam took voice lessons at age 7 but it was not classical training. Her musical skills were honed joining glee clubs during high school and her confidence was boosted when she joined Repertory Philippines’ summer workshops for 7 years. This DLSU Industrial Engineering major started classical training a year ago under the Philippine Opera Company. She enjoys sports, dancing, acting and joining beauty pageants.

Lara studies Music Education at the University of the Philippines. Both her parents are musicians/music professors with her mother, also a classical singer, being her first voice teacher. Lara started having formal lessons during her second year in high school. Her musical influences include Charlotte Church, Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Renee Olstead and Michael Buble.

These three teen female voices perform some of the current crop of pop hits with a classical twist to create a unique sound. Songs in their debut CD include their versions of Love Story (Taylor Swift), The Only Exception (Paramore), Breathless (The Corrs), Heaven (Bryan Adams), Sleeps With Butterflies (Tori Amos), Like A Prayer (Madonna), Only Hope (Mandy Moore), Burn (Tina Arena), Officially Missing You (Tamia), I Turn To You (Christina Aguilera) and Sundo (Imago).

The Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge is on! Oh Yeah!

With running events here left and right, Pharamaton unleashes a unique yet challenging competition with the best athletes in  the country, going around the country!

Dubbed “The Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge,” the competition took flight on March 5, 2011 and will last for 30 arduous days spanning the entire Philippines.  The challengers will need to accomplish various activities that will challenge them daily both physically and mentally as they traverse the country.

The Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge is the first of its kind and emerges as the most unique of all endurance races the nation has seen.  For one, it’s a month-long race where not only physical power and endurance are put to the test, but also the participants’ ability to strategize and maintain focus.  All in all, the participants are not just competing against each other but also competing against themselves as they strive to unleash their very best.

Secondly, the Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge is awarding the biggest prize money among local races: P500,000 awaits the ultimate MVP of the challenge while the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th placers will receive P250,000, P150,000, P100,000 and P50,000, respectively.

The final five

Out of the hopefuls who submitted their applications to vie for the challenge, five were singled out to make up the challengers who will try to endure and outlast each other in a one-of-a-kind race. They are Anthony Cuerpo, TJ Isla, Benson Martinez, Popo Remigio and Monica Torres.

A restaurateur by profession, Anthony Cuerpo has made sports a part of his life since his childhood but parted with it for a while after schooling.  A native of Iligan City, Cuerpo admitted that he became a heavy smoker prior to reigniting his love for competitive sports. He found out that he was allergic to cigarettes when he was taking a cooking course in the US.  He went cold turkey and eventually prevailed in his battle against nicotine.
Though being the oldest among the finalists, he is very confident that he can still beat competitors half his age. After all, he has been through several adventure races where endurance, which he considers as his strength, plays a vital role in the competition. He is currently overseeing a food business together with his wife who, incidentally, has also got bitten by the sports bug.  Further, Cuerpo considers the Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge as the biggest race he will be participating in to date, and hopes to finish each leg of the race under his best time possible.  He is into soccer, swimming, trail running, billiards, baseball, and trail and road biking.

TJ Isla comes into the competition with a string of experiences gained from competitions here and abroad. According to his blog, he is “a human resources practitioner and an overstaying graduate student of the UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations.” His interests reflect his passion for the outdoors – he’s into adventure racing, mountaineering, rock climbing, surfing, and, of course, marathon.  When not in competition mode, Isla loves to relax and spend his time with his wife and their pet dogs.  His dream is to qualify in the Ironman World Championship.

Benson Martinez, on the other hand, is a full-time dentist who will be running the race for his good friend and mentor Miguel Lopez, whom he replaced in the competition due to an accident. He considers being in the outdoors as a passion which he eventually fulfilled when he joined a professional mountaineering club in the mid-90s.  Over the years, Benson has scaled the country’s tallest and toughest mountains. Reaching a summit gives him a different high, as it allows him to commune with nature and appreciate God’s creation. It also allowed him to give dental services to remote areas in the Philippines.

Apart from mountain climbing, Benson is also into joining triathlons and adventure races, and has participated in a number of competitions here and abroad. For him, the key to winning any competition lies on one’s dedication, patience and perseverance – three values that he will surely fuel him to the finish line in the month-long challenge.

One of the two women in the race, Popo Remigio sets her eye on winning the Pharmaton challenge “para sa mga nanay.” She is a full-time mom and fitness instructor whose mettle in outdoor challenges cannot be easily ignored.

A graduate from the University of the Philippines College of Human Kinetics, Remigio also teaches swimming and indoor cycling. She is not intimidated competing with men because, according to her, nothing could be worse than the pain of giving birth to a child.

Completing the five finalists is Monica Torres, whose stunning looks hides a strength that even seasoned male athletes are wary of. She has participated in several running events in and out of the country.
Another alumna of the UP College of Human Kinetics, Torres considers herself as a late bloomer in the field of sports. It was only in 2008 when she became a dedicated athlete and prior to that, she was working as a personal trainor. Once she turned pro, Torres became part of the duathlon national team.
She is married for three years now to an equally athletic man, a triathlete to be exact. They actually met through the sport and, believe it or not, lost both their wedding rings while participating on a race. But what really binds them together is their love for sports and the adventure that goes along with every race.
With their impressive track record in outdoor sports as their passports to the Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge, all participants are very excited about the prospect of racing for 30 days throughout the Philippines. Aside from the fact that it will be the first for all of them to race under this format, the challenge of braving unpredictable elements and various terrains makes the race even more tricky.  Although they are excited to see the beauty of the country in all its 2,795 km distance, they all agree that the race will definitely push their abilities to the limits, physically and mentally.

We actually got a chance the meet the contenders face to face and they are really a fun batch because even though the challenge is difficult, they seem to be very bubbly and game with all of the challenges. I don't have my pick but I am eying for one boy and one girl. I wish them good luck on their journey!

Unleashing the MVP within

In preparing for what they consider as the “ultimate challenge,” all five participants maintain their respective training schedules focusing on endurance building and harnessing their own weak points. They also benefit from Pharmaton’s unique Ginseng G115, which is proven to energize both mind and body.

This standardized formulation of the natural ginseng extract is proven to provide extra energy, reduce tiredness, improve one’s memory, and heighten alertness and mental clarity. Regular intake of Pharmaton, which is the only product formulated with Ginseng G115, helps the body cope with fatigue, thus improving one’s physical and mental capabilities.

Be part of the challenge!

In line with the MVP Unleashed Challenge winner, Pharmaton extends the competition among its consumers through the MVP Unleashed Home Buddy Promo. From February 1, Pharmaton users have the chance to win cash by simply rooting for any of the five Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge contenders.

The Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge highlights Pharmaton’s commitment to elevate its consumers’ overall wellbeing. It also hopes to inspire more people to life their lives to the fullest through a balance of physical aptitude and mental sharpness.

MUSIC LYF: Sandwich with their new album CONTRA TIEMPO

SANDWICH
and their new album
Contra Tiempo

Sandwich recently launched their latest album CONTRA TIEMPO on March 4, 2011 at Eastwood city. To date it is their 6th album so far since 1998 following < S > marks the spot. It includes the single LAKAD which is already topping the charts and also a Music Video relased directed by Jason Magbanua. The band is actually one of my favorites with their hits always on my playlist in my music players. And meeting them also made me so happy to see how this band still keeps making good music and did not fall into the trend of disbanding.

In December 2009, Sandwich released a brand new single to help and inspire our typhoon victims through the song title PUTIK, which is also included in the new cd. The album shows impressive range: while all of the songs are radio-ready rockers, they span a wide variety of musical elements with other titles include LAPIT, LAPIT, LAPIT; TAKBO;SUGATAN; STRANDED SA AIRPORT; SULPUTIN; BISIKLETA; DISPALINGHADO; DOWNHILL; SIESTA and the brand new radio hit single PERA, PERA.

Sandwich signed with their home label EMI Philippines (now Polyeast records) in 2006 for their fourth overall release and major label debut called Five on the Floor catapulted them on the top of the OPM charts with the songs, Sugod, Sunburn, DVDx, and Walang Kadala dala. Then Sandwich released the 2008's < S > marks the spot and spawned four hit singles like Procrastinator, Betamax, Selos and Manila.

Sandwich are Raimund Marasigan (lead vocals/ keyboards); Myrene Academia (bass guitar); Mong Alcaraz (guitars); Diego Castillo (guitars) and Mike Dizon (drums). Their album CONTRA TIEMPO is now available in record stores.

Batch 86 Gives back to Deaf students

Begun in 1974 as a non-profit educational foundation, the Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf (SAID) is recognized as a forerunner in Total Communication.  The dream and dedication of a group of parents, educators of the deaf from Gallaudet University, deaf individuals and friends that started the program, has expanded and today challenges the deaf community to an even more far-reaching dream.

SAID stands as an expression of the benevolence of MIRIAM COLLEGE to allocate space for a school that has struggled for 33 years to find a “place in the sun”. In June 2007, SAID was integrated into the Miriam College system.  It now operates as one of the basic academic units of Miriam College.  MC-SAID is considered the first school for the deaf in the Southeast Asia to adopt the Total Communication philosophy in educating deaf children. The ultimate goal of SAID (now known as MC-SAID) is the mainstreaming of its graduates into the regular college and eventually in the working community.  The school aims to develop the maximum potential of the deaf child for a full and happy life.  Miriam College has helped realize this objective by offering a Mainstreamed College Program for deaf high school graduates.  The program was conceived as a stepping stone in concretizing the plans for providing higher educational opportunities for the deaf.  The motivating philosophy underlying this program of integration is the simple premise that children who are deaf have the right to dignity, individuality, uniqueness and to an opportunity to become fully participating citizens within their cultures, to the degree permitted by their abilities and capacities.

Prevent Aging Fast with Sustagen

70% of Filipino Adults Have Bodies That Are Aging Faster Than They Should

-WHAT!?

I could say from experience that this study is true since there are more stressful than years ago. living in a stressful world makes the sign of aging visible even at a younger age. And it affects all of us.

Last year, Youthopia Media Philippines, Inc. conducted the Body Age Test, in offices in Metro Manila. The Body Age Test is a special scientific evaluation to assess your Biological Age. Tabulated Body Age Test results of over 6,000 adults (30-50 years old) revealed that 7 out of 10 have bodies that are aging faster than they should.

The method used in measuring body age, otherwise known as biological age, is taken from scientifically validated technology in the U.S. This test calculates your body’s reaction to paced breathing and compares this with predicted values taken from a large normative database. This database has been collated from many countries created in collaboration with reputable academic organizations.

As body age is indicative of one’s health status, Mead Johnson, together with Mr. Gabby Concepcion, took the initiative to promote the fight against body aging. Gabby leads the drive by living a healthy lifestyle through exercising, visiting the doctor regularly, enjoying life, and having a proper diet. To help him keep his body age younger, Gabby now drinks Sustagen Premium with the Multi-Defense System everyday to supplement his diet.

Check out where and when you can take the Body Age Challenge.

LakBayan: PANAGBENGA Float Parade!

Panagbenga would not be complete without the Float Parade that is compared to the Rose festival in Pasadena California. And just seeing the floats makes you feel that it is. With the cold weather and ample sunshine, its the perfect day to have a parade filled with music, dance and tons and tons of different flowers.

The floats represents a company that commissioned the construction and design of each float. And like the previous years ( though its my first time to see them live), there is the float by the city government of Baguio, and also known brands like Jollibee, Samsung, Coca Cola, Dunkin' dougnuts etc. There are also new floats this year like TV5 with their first float for the Panagbenga festival.

Also great sights to see are the celebrities that joined in the festivities like Enciong Dee (Convergys Baguio), Sam Milby (Samsung), AJ Perez (Coca Cola), Empoy (TV5) and many more. Aside from that many would also feast their eyes on the lovely majorettes and toll policewomen and even Guys in bahag dancing with spears and gongs.
