REVIEW: Mallari - Let Loose the Serial Killer!

I feel that Pinoy horror and thrillers are making a comeback in Philippine cinema, and for the Metro Manila Film Festival 2023 we actually have two, one is Kampon and the other one is MALLARI which stars Piolo Pascual. This movie is made by  Mentorque Productions, and for a first in a very long time will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

From the title Mallari, it is a different take about the notorious first recorded Filipino serial killer who is also a parish priest, Severino Mallari. Though it does not take place exclusively on the original time period. For this movie Piolo Pascual will take on three characters in different time periods all leading to the same family and the secrets that they hold.

Along with the serial killings made by Padre Severino Mallari, there is also an element of the Pinoy mystic creatures and witchcraft which also adds to the complexities of his character. Actually the mystic elements to the film overtook the grim reality of the serial killings which the story is primarily about. Though if you would look at the accounts of the killings of Mallari, the motivations for the killings were more of getting rid of the scums of the earth or which is like acting like a vigilante in the night.

Mallari Brings History and Horror For MMFF 2023

For this edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival, Mentorque Productions introduces a unique film that deals with horrific history with MALLARI. Based on the real-life story of the first documented serial-killer in the Philippines, Fr. Juan Severino Mallari, which also has been talked about on the internet due to its very complicated situation.

Piolo Pascual will play three characters in the film from different timelines but linked to the same Mallari giving the story more complexity and also people who also revolves around the gruesome murders. Writer Enrico Santos shared that the project started in 2018 and took years in research and production started in 2022.

REEL DEAL: The Mommy Returns REVIEW

This Mother's Day its time to treat mom to a mommy film. As many local movies focus more on romantic love, it time to again celebrate motherhood, and Regal Films brings the mommy movie of the year with THE MOMMY RETURNS

The Mommy Returns is a family comedy-horror movie about a mother, Ruby (POKWANG) who dies right on the day of her 25th wedding anniversary with gorgeous husband, William (GABBY CONCEPCION). With her untimely death, she is temporarily trapped in PURGA (short for Purgatory) with its guardian, Dyoga (JOHN LAPUS, ang diyosa ng purga) and the pesky Manny, the chicken pet of San Pedro.

Enter CATHERINE (RUFFA GUTTIEREZ) - a younger, fresher, and much, much prettier woman who comes into the life of William. When she threatens to take Ruby's place as mother to her three beloved children (KIRAY, GERALD PESIGAN and JILLIAN WARD), hell (er, purgatory) breaks loose as Ruby escapes back to earth as a ghost to scare and drive Catherine out of the family she left behind!

REEL DEAL: The Mommy Returns SPOTLIGHT

Paying tribute to mothers all over through films that showcase their devotion and dedication has been a Regal Entertainment, Inc. tradition over the years.

Matriarch Lily Monteverde recognizes the important role each mother play in their children's lives via movies she produces for Regal Films.

This Year, the company relives this Mother's Day tradition on May 9 through its upcoming release. THE MOMMY RETURNS!

This time , it will be marked by no hysterics and no drama, but a combination of horrifying laughter that will cater to the entire family.

In the Joel Lamangan movie, comedienne Pokwang (as Ruby) shows her love for her bereaved child when she dies on her husband Gabby Concepcion's 25th weddding anniversary.

She does everything possible in her power to evade Dyosa ng Purga (played by John "Sweet" Lapus) while in purgatory just so Ruffa Gutierrez doesn't take her place as Gabby's new wife and stepmom to her three children - Kiray Celis, Gerald Pesigan and Jillan Ward. Join the riot include Gloria Diaz, John Lapus, Yaya Moi, Kerbie Zamora, Ervic Vijandre and Hiro  Magalona
