The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) presented the third concert of its landmark centennial season celebration, The Manila Symphony Orchestra Celebration: The MSO Centennial Season, with a gala performance titled “LIBERATION: 80 Years of the Philippine Republic.” The concert took place on July 4, 2026, at 7:30 PM. Presented by the Manila Symphony Orchestra Foundation and Standard Insurance, co-presented by EastWest Bank and PAGCOR, and sponsored by Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation, the grand was organized in partnership with Bagong Pilipinas, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and The Metropolitan Theater. The performance featured guest conductor Jose Reyna, Jr. leading the orchestra, alongside featured soloists Jeanne Marquez on violin and Jason Marquez on clarinet. The gala performance directly commemorated the historic milestone of July 4, 1946, when the American flag was lowered at Luneta and the Philippine flag was raised, marking the formal birth of a proud, sovereign republic.

As part of its Centennial Season, the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) commemorates a landmark event in both Philippine history. Eighty years ago, on July 5, 1946, following the inauguration of the Republic of the Philippines, the MSO presented a Gala Symphony Concert at the Rizal Memorial Stadium as part of the national celebrations marking Philippine independence.

Led by Venezuelan conductor Joshua Dos Santos, the Manila Symphony Orchestra continues its Centennial Season with a program that moves from the refined discipline of Classical style to the emotional breadth of the late Romantic symphony.
The evening opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante in E-flat, K. 364 for violin and viola, a work celebrated for its technical precision. The piece features rising Filipino artists Emanuel John Villarin (violin) and Christian Wrona (viola), whose musical dialogue reflects the expressive restraints of Mozart’s music.

The Manila Symphony Orchestra celebrates its centennial season in a spirit of thanksgiving with a program that honors its legacy and looks toward the future. Exactly one hundred years ago, the MSO performed Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 at its inaugural concert, a work that returns to the stage in this historic celebration, first conducted by founder Alexander Lippay and now and now under the baton of Singaporean guest conductor Darrel Ang, alongside the Emperor Concerto, featuring rising young Chinese pianist Muyu Liu. MSO Trustee and National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab’s Misa 2000 and Te Deum conclude the program with the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers under the baton of Professor Mark Anthony Carpio, in a resounding tribute of gratitude to the MSO’s enduring faith, excellence, and service to the Filipino musical spirit.

The MSO Concerto Competition was a program that was started in the 1960s whose former winners include Cecile Licad, Raul Sunico, Corazon Pineda-Kabayao,
Cecilia Basilio-Roxas and many other distinguished Filipino artists. This year’s
revival of this tradition is one of MSO’s long list of programs and activities as it prepares to celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2026.
The winners will be rehearsing with the MSO conducted by its executive director and associate conductor Jeffrey Solares, and will be presented in a Concert of Winners on October 15, 2025 at the
GSIS Theater - 7:30 PM.
