REEL DEAL: Alice Through The Looking Glass REVIEW

It was years since this long awaited sequel of live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland has finally made the next story of Underland, but indeed worth it as it was able to build a new story. The visually appealing and adventure-laced journey of Alice will open up the imagination of many with Alice Through The Looking Glass.

This retelling of the story of Lewis Carol, brings in more stories and adversaries to the unusual yet colorful world beyond realty. I remember that Alice in Wonderland was one of the earliest movies I reviewed back then. It was way back in 2010, now it has been 6 years since the last movie and it can observed that some of the original cast have aged. But since fantasy would give an interesting turn and texture for the characters, the visuals helped in keeping the vibe of Underland alive.

Since there are new characters introduced such as Time (Sacha Baron Cohen), and it does involve going back and forth time to fix something that is affecting the jolly Mad Hatter which has turned completely not himself lately. This is also one of the last films of Alan Rickman who played Absalom.

REEL DEAL: Les Misérables REVIEW

The long wait (here in the Philippines) is over with the new year bringing the Christmas movies into the screens and one of the most anticipated is the Oscar nominated and Golden Globe best film winner in the Comedy/Musical category, Les Misérables.

It would actually be my first time to see the critically acclaimed musical made by Claude-Michel Schönberg, original French lyrics by Alain Boublil based on the novel by Victor Hugo. Took place in the era of the French Revolution talks about the struggles and tribulations of characters Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), Fantine (Anne Hathaway), Cosette (Amanda Syfried), and Javert (Russel Crowe). Many of them have backgrounds in theater and musicals which is suprizing to some fans as they sang and performed well.

The story was indeed a tearjerker with the intensity of the scenes made more dramatic with the musical delivery. since the movie is adapted from the musical, it did complete the experience with a unique set of cast, great set deign and soothing music quality that brought to life the well loved musical.

Great performances and our top picks for best performance would be for Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks. For new and avid Les Miserables fans, the movie indeed gave a intensive view of the lives of the characters something like a close up view which makes each scene more touching to the audience.

REEL DEAL: The Dictator REVIEW

The Republic of Wadiya makes its mark not by terrorism but the wacky and super crazy movie The Dictator starring Sacha Baron Cohen. Though he might be known with his very controversial film Borat. The Dictator tells the story of General-Admiral Aladeen who leads the nation of Wadiya which is rich in oil however lives under the Tyranny of the "Supreme One" who also is spoiled with almost everything he wants. However he still feels a sense of loneliness.

The Dictator is actually based from a novel of the fallen leader Saddam Hussein entitled, "Zabibah and the King". They made a modern twist to this story plus the fact that Cohen is a genius in making insanely controversial comedy that requires an open mind and sense of humor to greatly enjoy the film.

There would be a lot of stereotypes, racial slurs written in a comedic way that in the end you would laugh and forget the insulting script. Though I can say pertains to politics, the society wherein it serves as an eye opener to the issues of the world which also shows the irony that many have failed to portray. The long wait was indeed worth it!
