Big-screen spectacle “Wonka,” is “the perfect Christmas movie,” says director Paul King

When director Paul King, known for the family-favorite Paddington movies, was a child, one of the first books he read was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by beloved children’s book author Roald Dahl. “I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” says King. “I read it again and again until the pages fell out of the cover. I remember loving the wild comedy, all the crazy characters, and the magic and mayhem of the chocolate factory.”

Years later, King would read it again from the perspective of an adult – and he found new things to love about the story! “When David [Heyman, producer] mentioned the idea of making a Wonka movie, I read it again and realized it also has an incredibly rich, almost Dickensian emotional core,” shares the director. “Charlie is such a kind, decent little boy and his family’s poverty causes them such suffering. The fact he goes on to inherit the factory, a more wonderful gift than he could ever have dreamt, had me in floods of tears – and the prospect of trying to make a film which captured Dahl’s spirit was too exciting to turn down.”

New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “The Nun II” scares up strong numbers at the Philippine box office

Newest chapter in highest-grossing entry in the juggernaut $2 billon “The Conjuring” Universe comes in at #1 in Philippines

New Line Cinema’s “THE NUN II” – the next chapter in the story of “The Nun,” the highest-grossing entry in the most successful horror franchise of all time, “The Conjuring” Universe – landed at the top of this weekend’s box office, coming in at #1 in its debut and taking in PHP 90 million in the Philippines. Directed by Michael Chaves and produced by Peter Safran and James Wan, “The Nun II” opened on September 6.

The scare sequences in “The Nun II” feel fresh and are not derivative of the earlier films, says producer

What is it about nuns that works so well in horror movies, such as “The Nun” and its upcoming sequel?

“I think that it’s the idea of the ultimate evil possessing the vessel for the ultimate good,” says Peter Safran, producer for “The Nun II.” “I think nuns are supposed to be unabashedly good in the service of goodness, and the most evil thing is mocking that goodness by taking her form. I think that’s what it is that people really respond to.

“And let’s be honest, a lot of people are very scared of nuns in general, but I think from a supernatural thriller perspective, the idea of that evil embedded in what should be the epitome of good is just so sacrilegious and compelling.”

Directed by Michael Chaves, “The Nun II” finds Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) once again coming face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun, this time in France, where a priest has recently been murdered.

Everything is bigger in “Meg 2: The Trench”, say filmmakers

For director Ben Wheatley, the goal for “Meg 2: The Trench” was simple: “Taking ‘The Meg’ and supercharging it – bigger creatures, bigger action, bigger monsters, bigger environments, bigger equipment – the whole thing. Bigger.”

Watch the trailer: https://youtu.be/HwokLHOYd5c

The cast also got a very welcome addition that helped supersize its cast – global action icon Wu Jing, star of five of the 10 highest-grossing films in China. “To be honest, I’ve always been terrified of monster films,” says Jing. “You can ask me to jump off a high-rise building, and I think that’s easier for me – but fighting a fictitious monster? That is something very hard for me.”

Jason Statham always keen to do his own stunts in “Meg 2: The Trench”, says director

Action star Jason Statham loves stunt work.

According to Ben Wheatley, director of “Meg 2: The Trench,” Statham is always keen to do as many of his own stunts as possible. Anytime the actor is seen powering a jet ski through the water, that is indeed Statham. Wheatley offers, “Because the physics of a face are hard to fake – you have to be upside down to really look like you are upside down – we had Jason on this kind of giant hand drill setup, and we’d pull the trigger and spin him around, firing water at his face. He wanted as few gimbal shots as possible, almost all of it is him – obviously not jumping a giant wave, but him riding a jet ski very, very quickly. And scarily, we were all at the monitors, saying, “Please come back all right!””

The box-office and critical success of the futuristic blockbuster “The Wandering Earth” has attracted big talents to join the follow-up film.

In “The Wandering Earth II,” a prequel to the 2019 hit, one of Hong Kong’s biggest artists, Andy Lau (“As Tears Go By,” “House of Flying Daggers,” “Infernal Affairs”), is playing a scientist. Just as the film’s creative team is happy to have Lau on board, Lau couldn’t be more elated. “My sci-fi dream is fulfilled,” Lau shared at the press conference for “The Wandering Earth II,” in Philippine cinemas May 31. “And I still feel immersed in the character today and don’t want to wake up.”

As exciting as it was to star in the prequel to the groundbreaking Chinese science fiction film, it also had its challenges, particularly when it came to wearing his spacesuit costume. “Putting on the suit makes it difficult to turn around or even twist (my body),” he also shared at the press conference. “The most unbearable part is I have no way to scratch where it itches. I stuck duct tape on the inside of my helmet, so I could relieve the urges by rubbing my face against the tape.”

Global action icon Wu Jing is back in the highly anticipated prequel “The Wandering Earth II”

Action icon Wu Jing has been very busy.

This month, the prolific Chinese actor, director and martial artist (“Wolf Warrior” films, “Shaolin”) will be seen in “The Wandering Earth II,” prequel to the 2019 futuristic blockbuster “The Wandering Earth.” Given the fate of Jing’s character in the first movie, it would have been impossible to include him in a second movie but fortunately, director Frant Gwo came up with the perfect solution. “Wu provided us with a lot of selfless help in the first installment,” said Gwo in an interview with China.org.cn. “I wanted to show gratitude to him, but I didn't want to write some unconvincing plot about his resurrection. So, I said, let’s do a prequel.”
