REEL DEAL: The Martian REVIEW

Sci-fi movies are back and it is time for more space exploration. The last space journey was with Interstellar and Jupiter Ascending,  but this time it comes to a very close predicament to today's time as well as the technology with THE MARTIAN.

The Martian is based on the book of Andy Weir in 2011. Directed by Ridley Scott and stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney who is part of the Mars exploration team called Ares III, the team left the planet due to bad weather but Mark was left because he was presumed to be dead. However he managed to live but faces the challenge of living in the deserted red planet.

If it will be compared with the all-alone situation stories, this is the most complicated. Unlike being on a island, dessert of mountain, Mars is not a friendly territory. The pressure and temperature are still far to support life. To survive, he must use and keep his resources intact and produce his food. Yes there will be science and technology in this film, but it is simplified into actions and not words beyond space.

Mia Wasikowska, from "Alice in Wonderland" to "Crimson Peak"‏

Universal Pictures' new gothic thriller “Crimson Peak” is confidently carried by the inquisitive naïveté of its protagonist Edith Cushing, played by Polish-Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, whose breakthrough role came in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

An aspiring author, Edith Cushing is haunted by the ghosts of her past and cursed by the visions of her future. Losing her mother to black cholera when she was only 10 had a profound effect on Edith’s upbringing. She matured to the task of taking care of her aging father, all the while seeking the liberties of forward-thinking women in late Victorian society. Haunted by the memory of a warning heeded by her mother’s ghost, Edith developed a fascination for the supernatural and was set on publishing a novel of gothic fiction when her own life became a case for the story.

"In the Heart of the Sea" Sails with New Trailer‏

Warner Bros. Pictures has just launched the latest trailer of “In the Heart of the Sea,” director Ron Howard's real-life ocean adventure starring Chris Hemsworth. The trailer may be viewed here at https://youtu.be/FvnyhWX7Aow.

In the winter of 1820, the Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

“In the Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

Kakao Talk Launches Open Chat, a New Chat Feature that Allows Users to Begin Chatting with the Click of a Link

Kakao Philippines Corp. has announced the launch of Open Chat, a Kakao Talk feature that allows users to chat with others at the click of a link. All chat rooms in Open Chat have designated URLs, which users can share on social media and other websites. Any Kakao Talk user can enter the chat room without providing their mobile phone numbers or Kakao Talk IDs. Group chats are then easier to start because users who have the link can join the conversation; no need to add people one by one.

Human relationships offline are not equal. There are mutual friends whom users are comfortable sharing their mobile numbers or profiles with, and then there are complete strangers. Kakao provides a middle level of interaction with this new feature. Open Chat connects users through links; as opposed to regular chats, which require the exchange of phone numbers. Open Chat allows users to have more control over their friends list and gives them a secure alternative: to chat with whomever they need without having to divulge personal information.
