Japanese Block Buster Coming To The Philippines Cinemas This Week.

Exit 8 is the movie adaptation of the horror stimulation game that received an 8 minutes standing ovation during the 2025 Cannes Films Festival. In Japan, the movie earned 15 Million USD in Box Office after 11 days. The movie will be released exclusively in SM Cinemas on September 17.

Based on the global hit eponymous video game created by KOTAKE CREATE. A man trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway sets out to find Exit 8. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary. If you discover an anomaly, turn back immediately. If you don’t, carry on. Then leave from Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor?

STAYING TRUE TO TO THE ORIGIN

The movie is praised for staying true to its origin with the perfect castings. This is the second movie directed by Genki Kawamura, who was eager to create a movie that blur the boundaries between dream and reality, space and time, and was captivated by the Indie game title “Exit 8”. The leading casts were selected from auditions whose merits are already recognized by audiences worldwide.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Kevin Kline are an eccentric duo in “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” in PH cinemas Sept 17

Every journey has a beginning, and the beginning of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is a car rental agency run by a strange cashier and a mechanic, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Kevin Kline respectively. The odd pair offers character David (Colin Farrell) a 1994 Saturn GL, a car way past its prime, insistent upon adding a retro GPS with the package. It’s this vehicle that propels David, joined by Sarah (Margot Robbie), a stranger he met at a mutual friend’s wedding, on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.

Zoë Kravitz is more than meets the eye as Yvonne in “Caught Stealing”

Now in PH cinemas

For director Darren Aronofsky, the chemistry between his two leads Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz in crime thriller Caught Stealing is electric. “Hank (Austin Butler) is madly in the throes of a new relationship with Yvonne (Zoë Kravitz),” says Aronofsky. “They have a very exciting passionate love affair that feels like it's about to get to a more serious place.”

Zoë Kravitz adds that other than their sizzling romance, her character Yvonne, who is an EMT, comes from a place of genuine care and concern for Hank.  “Yvonne’s an empathetic person,” Kravitz says. “I think she likes to take care of people, including Hank. She doesn’t do the best job, but she tries.”

Kontrabida Academy - Embracing Our Villain Era

What seems to be the most overused plot in TV and movies is what made Kontrabida Academy fun and entertaining in its run. We all know the dynamics of bidas and kontrabidas and how they make the story interesting, and it sometimes also shows in reality with our own heroes and villains in our lives.

Barbie and Eugene paired with the most iconic villains of many generations is celebrated as an institution in this film. Being too good does have its limits and will definitely bring out the pent up badness in everyone. Chris Martinez indeed is a master in terms of campy comedy with a touch of sci-fi. And it also jabs in some commentary on the entertainment industry on taking new risks or sticking to the formula that they think still works.

Kontrabida Academy was indeed a delightful surprise and I would think a spin off can also be possible to extend to more iconic Pinoy villains.

Kontrabida Academy  is now streaming on Netflix.
