Are We Close In Eradicating Malaria? Experts Say A Few More Years.

When I was young, the most dreaded mosquito disease was MALARIA not dengue. But times has changed, malaria is decreasing as we found ways in fighting the fatal disease. Also a problem of many nation especially poor ones who have vulnerable breeding grounds made them centers of epidemic plus the lack of access of healthcare often led to deaths of many people.

But there is hope now in this new millennium, this is what was announced in the Kapihan sa Manila Hotel last November together with the Department of Health (DOH) national Malaria coordinator Dr. Raffy Deray  who stressed that the country is definitely on its way to being Malaria-free, thanks to the efforts of some private-sector health advocates who have worked hand-in-hand with the government to curb the dreaded disease.

Understanding Depression: What We Need To Know

It should be a wake up call for all of us that depression is just not a fad or a choice one would engage if they wanted to. Depression is far more complicated than we expected. And it already took many lives and it is not exclusive to a specific age group, race, gender, or social status.

Since Robin Williams' took his own life in 2014, other big stars like singers Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington also ended their lives in similar fashion.

In the Philippines, depression was on the news because of now controversial remarks by comedian, TV host, and actor Joey De Leon.

Asia-Pacific region facing a ‘hidden epidemic’ of HIV among adolescents, new report finds

The Asia-Pacific region is facing a ‘hidden epidemic’ of HIV among adolescents. There were an estimated 50,000 new HIV infections among adolescents aged 15-19 in 2014, accounting for 15 percent of new infections. There are now around 220,000 adolescents living with HIV in the region, with large cities like Manila, Bangkok, Hanoi and Jakarta hubs of new infections.

Although new HIV infections are falling overall, they are rising among adolescents from key populations, in particular young gay men and other men who have sex with men. The rise in new infections coincides with an increase in risky behaviour, such as multiple sexual partners and inconsistent condom use.

HEALTHY LYF: Dengue Tops Moms Most Feared Diseases

Together with the common flu, typhoid, hepatitis, among others, dengue is up there in the list as one of the most dreaded diseases that moms worry their kids may contract. Unlike the other illnesses mentioned, dengue doesn’t have a vaccine that can provide immediate protection.

Prevalent in tropical countries such as the Philippines, dengue affects people differently. While others may stop at having flu-like symptoms such as high fever and muscle-and-joint pains and rash, others suffer life-threatening complications. A few succumb to Dengue Shock Syndrome, in which the patient’s white blood cells drop to a dangerous level, leading to internal bleeding. In some of these cases, dengue becomes fatal.

While it is true that all people, regardless of age, can be infected with dengue, statistics from the Department of Health’s National Epidemiology Center show that it is children and adolescents who are hit the hardest. Almost half of the dengue cases last year were from 5 to 14 years old age range.
