The Curse of La Llorona - Latino Folklore Comes To Life

Hollywood has been bombarded with the same kind of ghouls and monsters that the west has to offer, but they have yet to explore to occult from the people of Latin America. Having a rich history of stories that are told locally, The Curse of La Llorona is a great addition to the Conjuring Universe opening the occult horrors from Mexican folklore and the practices that come along with it

This film was co-produced by James Wan who had built the Conjuring universe into the thrilling franchise it has become. Now adding this to the collection is fitting given that this now deals with the supernatural beings from a different region. As many people don't have the idea that Latin America holds a lot of folklore and practices that are more eerie and weird than what we always see.

Looking into the story of the "weeping woman" of La Llorona, it takes place in Los Angeles with a social worker named Anna and her kids who later on becomes the victim of the obsessive La Llorona who already had child victims that were drowned. The ghost then finds its way to Anna's home and her kids.

Latin American Folklore "La Llorona" Out to Terrify PH Audiences Soon

From New Line Cinema, “The Curse of La Llorona” brings the iconic Latin American legend to the Philippines in an original horror film produced by James Wan (“The Conjuring” universe, “Aquaman”).

Before there were horror movies, the currency of fear the world over was folklore.  And while the best tales endure, few have retained their power to scare like La Llorona.

Master of Horror James Wan Produces "The Curse of La Llorona"

One of the most iconic and widely known figures in Mexican folklore, La Llorona – and her terrible, eternal hunt for children’s souls to replace the ones she drowned in life – has fueled the nightmares of generations of kids and left her mark on a vast swath of Latin America.  Her story has taken on a life of its own through centuries of tellings.  And though it twists and turns along the way, in every form and any language, one thing remains constant:  it still scares the living daylights out of anyone who hears it.

“When I first came to America, one of the first stories that people would come up and tell me was the legend of La Llorona,” says James Wan, producer of the upcoming “The Curse of La Llorona” from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures.

“People see my movies and guess that I love ghost stories – and they’re right – but La Llorona is so much more,” continues Wan.  “It hits you at the deepest levels of horror and touches on fears you didn’t even know you had.  You understand why it’s such an integral part of people’s lives growing up.  I just became fixated on this story.  I thought, ‘What an amazing, scary figure to bring to the big screen.’”

About “The Curse of La Llorona”

La Llorona.  The Weeping Woman.   A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand.  The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations.

In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain.

Now her tears are eternal.  They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed.  La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own.  As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious…and her methods more terrifying.
