The story of corruption is not really new to the country and the Filipino people, yet many still don't know the very complex and dark plans and people behind them. This year, Tanghalang Pilipino introduces WALANG KUKURAP by Layeta Bucoy that tackles the complexity and morbid truth about corruption, politics and power.
WALANG KUKURAP shows the political network that is interlinked with drugs, money, strategies, loyalty, and family. It shows the darkside of both parties and all who are involved. In a town controlled by powerful leaders with political masks to decieve the public of their true intention. However, it also shows that the problem is also fueled by the poor who tolerate and benefit from corrupt culture. The question that goes into my head is "When will this end? How will we end this?"
It is actually my first time to see Tanghalang Pilipino (either I was too young to remember, or it was my past life), and it shocked me. Though I have seen stage plays with a violent theme, this one is the most moving I have seen so far. They have a set design that is surprisingly simple yet very multipurpose. I was also want to crumple like a paper upon seeing real hammers and handsaw as props. It spooked my soul when they are using them, but they did a wonderful job of executing them to be so realistic.
Realistic. That would be the perfect word to describe WALANG KUKURAP. Timely also perhaps as the 2013 elections is near and we will hear a sea of promises from aspiring and seasoned politicians. Also it was an eyeopener for me to observe that the comic relief here would contain the solution, yet we just laugh and care less about it.
I'm also happy to hear one of my favorite OPM artist, Gloc 9's song BUGTONG to be the soundtrack of the play. The song too, is a realistic reflection of what the play wants to imply about dirty politics and power play. I also want to congratulate all the amazing actors for a well executed scenes and lines! A great first impression indeed!
According to Tanghalang Pilipino's artistic director, Nanding Josef, “The said straight play is a vibrantly new and highly experimental research-based contemporary production, which blurs the lines between art and life, fiction and reality as it vivisects the darkest parts of the Filipino soul. Holding no punches, it pounds away in search of answers, attacking the essence of corruption on multiple levels. It challenges philosophically, morally, and emotionally its audience. It asks not to just point fingers at the monsters outside but also stare honestly in the mirror, at one’s self, in homes."
“‘Walang Kukurap’ is a forceful reminder that if people do not take the challenge to better this world, then there is no need to die to experience hell."
The same team that brought Dulaang UP’s shocking adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Titus Andronicus’ is the artistic collaboration between the director-playwright tandem of Tuxqs Rutaquio and Layeta Bucoy together with TP’s homegrown talents—the Actors Company led by Jonathan Tadioan, Marco Viaña, Regina De Vera, Nicolo Magno, Ralph Mateo, Remus Villanueva, Doray Dayao, April Joy Iñigo, and Jovanni Cadag.
It will also feature veteran and competent theater actors who have crossed over to the mainstream arts, like Suzette Ranillo, Sherry Lara, Delphine Buencamino, Mymy Davao, Ding Navasero, Crispin Pineda, Paulo Cabanero, Pewee O’Hara, Nonoy Froilan, Lou Veloso, Sharmaine Suarez, and Ced Torrecarion. Another highlight of this second offering is the featuring of GLOC 9 on special dates of its run.
