The Literacy Coordinating Council of the Department of Education has revealed the winners of the 2012 National Literacy Awards. This award recognizes outstanding local government units that made remarkable inroads in bringing literacy to more community constituency.
Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC said the awards bring home the point that education is a very rewarding investment for the LGUs because an educated constituency can bring more progress to the community. “When the LGU invests in education, they are better armed to solve persistent social problems such as peace and order and livelihood,” added Luistro.
For the component city category the winners are: the city government of Balanga, Bataan under Mayor Jose Enrique S. Garcia, III, 1st place; the city government of Tabaco, Albay under Mayor Cielo Krisel L. Luistro, 2nd place; the city government of Tuguegarao, Cagayan under Mayor Delfin Telan Ting, 3rd place; the city government of Alaminos, Pangasinan under Mayor Hernani A. Braganza, 4th place and the city government of Malaybalay, Bukidnon under Mayor Ignacio W. Zubiri, 5th place.
Under the highly urbanized city category, the winners are the city government of Davao under Mayor Sara Z. Duterte, 1st place; the city government of Pasay, NCR under Mayor Antonio G. Calixto, 2nd place; the city government of Butuan, Caraga under Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr, 3rd place; the city government of Tacloban under Mayor Alfred Romualdez, 4th place; and the cities of Baguio under Mayor Mauricio Domogan and General Santos under Mayor Darlene Magnolia Antonino-Custodio tied for 5th place.
In the Municipal Level Class A category, the winners are Plaridel, Bulacan under Mayor Anastacia Vistan, 1st place; San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte under Mayor Alfredo Valdez Jr, 2nd place; Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon under Mayor Rogelio N. Quino, 3rd place; Laak, Compostela Valley under Mayor Reynaldo B. Navarro, 4th place and Calauan, Laguna under Mayor Felissa L. Berris, 5th place.
In the Municipal Level Class B category, the winners are Cuyo, Palawan under Mayor Andrew L. Ong, 1st place; Bato, Catanduanes under Mayor Eulogio R. Rodriguez, 2nd place; Laoac, Pangasinan under Mayor Silverio Alarcio Jr, 3rd place; Braulio Dujali, Davao del Norte under Mayor Lolita Moral, 4th place and Garcia-Hernandez, Bohol; under Mayor Miguelito B. Galendez, 5th place.
In the outstanding literacy program category the winners are Pamana Ka: Paaralang Mangyan na Angkop sa Kulturang Aalagaan in San Jose Mindoro Occidental proposed by Sr. Aristea R. Bautista, FMM, 1st place; Education For All: A Way and Ways Towards Empowering Self and Communities of Digos City proposed by Cor Jesu College—Br. Polycarp Institute for Community Development Foundation, Inc. 2nd place; FCF Literacy Program: Handog Aral sa Ikauunlad ng Buhay in Bgy. Runruno, Quezon, Nueva Ecija proposed by FCF Minerals Corporation—Runruno Livelihood Foundation, 3rd place; Buhai-Kamalayan in Naga City proposed by Universidad de Sta. Isabel, 4th place and the Out-of-School Youth and Adults Community-Based Eco-Friendly Literacy Program in Alaminos City, Pangasinan proposed by Junior Chamber International, Hundred Islands, 5th place.
