ART IS A BANG: "Wait Until Dark" Gave Me Mixed Emotions

January starts with a Thriller with Repertory Philippines with the staging of "Wait Until Dark" at OnStage Greenbelt. As unlike the usual musicals and comedies on stage, this one starts the year with an eerie and thrilling production of the stage play by Frederick Knott which dates back to 1966.

This thriller has been staged countless times and has even made into a motion picture starring  Alan Arkin and the late Audrey Hepburn and Richard Crena. And for 2014, Repertory starts their 77th season with this dark yet engaging production.

The protagonist Susy Hendrix, played by Liesl Batucan, is a blind housewife who can do chores despite her condition. Her husband Sam, played by Lorenz Martinez, goes away for a while to work, and their loft is the target of three con men out looking for a heroin-stuffed doll hidden in the apartment.

The story then goes into a thrilling action of inquisition, disguise, treachery, and shifting emotion of the characters. There were interesting dynamic parts where characters engage in a lot of action and drama despite having a fixed set. There was a good mix of chemistry of seasoned actors along with Leisl and Lorenz were Joel Trinindad (Mike Trenton) and Robbie Guevarra (Sergeant Croaker ), Arnel Carrion (Roat), and  Gloria (Daniella Gana).

The feeling actually creeps into the audience slowly but surely as it builds up the story and the complexity of situation, and also the true intentions of the characters. With the "dark" scenes made more eerie with the sound and lighting effects. The effect after the play was both heavy but entertaining, a thing that live theater can do.

Wait Until Dark is directed by Miguel Faustmann, Lights by John Batalla and Jethro Joaquin for sound design.
