With probably the longest title for a commercial film for 2020, Birds of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn, or simply the first three letters wants to be that superhero action flick with women headlining the lead characters.
Though women leads in superhero cinematic universe is not new, Birds of Prey showcases women in groups can also do hardcore action while still keeping their feminine charm in the film. They did got some star power with the inclusion of Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie, to boost hype as she is favored by fans in the DC Comics franchise.
Birds Of Prey has also been adapted many times and their various members gives an opportunity to pick an interesting set of characters to pair with. And these five women plus Harley Quinn is a mix of diversity along with women power.
The girl gang consists of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. While the villains include Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, and Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis / Black Mask. The film is also directed by Cathy Yan, a Chinese-American director who also did a good job for a major superhero movie project like this.
Basically the plot revolves with Harley Quinn after they broke up with the Joker which opens ups threats as she is no longer under his mantle. However Harley is very capable on her own yet finds herself in the messy crime network of Roman Sionis / Black Mask which also involves the other ladies.
Though it does not have the big names of the Justice League, the girls here are out to prove that they are not damsels in distress, they are a fighter in their own way. Filipino representation is also seen with Ella Jay Basco.
I really liked the "fantabulous" action made by the girls especially Harley Quinn, the narration sequence and the no holds barred lines which justifies the R-16 rating to make sure it it won't hold back with the violence and action. Another great addition to the DCEU and hope this can also get a sequel or a crossover.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) is now showing in cinemas.
Overall rating: 4.3 out of 5
