REVIEW - The Odyssey

Hyped up to be the movie of the year which was also shot using IMAX cameras, The Odyssey brings the epic tale of the adventures of Odysseus that we have known in our Mythology class.  Now Christopher Nolan wants to raise the bar with a star studded cast, beautiful filming locations, and an action drama that moves us, delivered by the amazing actors. Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, joining him are Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. 

They did deliver to make it an epic with detailed wide shots, chaotic fight scenes, and suspenseful predicaments. The score and sound worked perfectly to bring the loudness and silence for the part. Overall, it has indeed earned it hype and I can confidently say it is one of the best movies of the year.

Though some may find the creative elements not conventional like the accents and dialogue, it eventually fades as the story progresses. I did appreciate the utilization of the IMAX format with the wide shots of the sea and landscapes. The film also feels like a mix of his styles from his past films like The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Inception - a subtle mark in his works.

Theron was drawn to the enduring legacy of this quirky clan that, in a subversively delightful way, represents what family really means. “I think at the core, why people really respond to the Addams family, is because ultimately they will always be Addams and they take pride in that and never try to change themselves for anybody,” she says. “We all want to believe that we live our lives authentically, especially within our family circle. And this is a family that lives to the extreme. But there is something that is very grounded, because even though they're trying to kill each other, they love each other, and you really see that.”
