A great way as we end Women's Month is show how powerful women can be and can par with men with the most nerve-wracking situations and tasks. Pedring Lopez's MARIA wants to prove that to the Pinoy movie goers. Starring Cristine Reyes, the movie is a revenge film of a former assassin that have embraced a new life got caught in the web of her former organization.
The film is something that wants to prove a lot of things. First, that women can also do hardcore action just like Anne Curtis in Buybust. Second, it redefines pinoy action not exclusive to be led by male protagonists but also by female actresses who can handle the very tough environment of high octane scenes. Finally it also aims to raise pinoy action to compete with international action films in Southeast Asia primarily.
It was time to level up with the skills made by Filipino Martial Artists that incorporates Escrima/Kali techniques which other countries done with integrating their own martial arts to their movies. Beyond the usual explosions and guns, hand-to-hand combat is also a good way to showcase those techniques while in an ultra violent setting which makes it more thrilling.
Cristine Reyes is a great choice for the role of Maria/Lily because she and her family is into mixed martial arts and training, getting hurt, and start again was a routine she has learned with the discipline. Maria also stars Freddie Webb, Ivan Padilla, Jennifer Lee, Kc Montero, LA Santos, and Ronnie Lazaro.
If we love to celebrate powerful women, we can start with our very own with Maria as she rocks theaters which hardcore action that we have never seen in Philippine cinema in recent years. And with how it was made, we can also be proud that we have good action flicks we can also share to the world.
