Kids Learn Basketball With Ease And Fun With Cholo Camp

Summer clinics for kids are still the go to activity that parents wants for their kids, and the number one sport for almost everyone is basketball. Though there are so many courts in the country, the proper training and knowledge is still needed to make sure players are able to play efficiently and fairly.

Pocholo Iñigo Villanueva or Cholo was known as a member of the De La Salle Green Archers where they won the 2007 championship and also awarded as Finals MVP. After this he was drafted into the PBA with Air21 Express. He started venturing into coaching back in 2008 for DLSU and he enjoyed it as his career in professional basketball continues.

However he felt that his true calling was really with coaching as he dedicated more time for coaching and worked with various teams as mentor. He currently is the Head Coach for the DLSU Lady Archers and the Assistant Coach for the Jose Rizal University. From here he formed his own basketball clinic called Cholo Camp.

Cholo Camp started in a village court in Paranaque in 2010, initially called Archer's Camp and held only during summer break. It grew and expanded into several locations. With more kids joining the camp, the finally embraced the brand Cholo Camp that now caters to boys and girls from 4 to 18 years old.

In 2014, Cholo Camp officially started in Colegio San Agustin in Dasmarinas Village Makati. Initially, it was a partnership with the school for Summer Basketball Program. Because the students and the parents were very happy with Cholo Camp, it was extended to run throughout the school year.

Apart from this, Coach Cholo was also conducting Private Training Sessions for players who wanted to improve their game. This was when the students started calling their training sessions, “Cholo Camp”.

Cholo Camp in CSA now runs for a total of 5 Programs annually. 2 of the Programs are held during the Summer Period and 3 of the Programs are held every Saturdays during the School Year. They are now holding CholoCamp Programs in CSA Bulacan and De LaSalle University - Integrated School as the newest locations.

To assure the quality of learning of participants, they retain a low Coach to Player ratio with Coach Cholo personally supervises each Program and adjusts the training activities as needed. He even knows each participant by name which boosts the morale of the players that they are acknowledge by their coach.

They instill the values of the sport and personality development with proper guidance and techniques. Feedback is given to them on what are their strengths and improvements to let them know which areas need more training. And their dedication has made milestones as Coach Cholo shares that a couple of his earlier trainees are now playing in the UAAP.

He also has assistant coaches that are well trained in teaching rather than having professional players which might not connect well with the students. He believes that it is better to have good educators that will go well with the students so that they learn better.

And their system was very effective as both parents and participants enjoy every moment on the camp. They also have competitive games to test their skills on the actual court. Now that they have proven the camp is a very effective one, and with good feedback and results, Cholo Camp is looking forward to more future basketball stars in the making through their program.
